Vickie dreamt of the day Jack would propose to her from the first day the two met. She knew he was the one she would spend the rest of her life with that same day. He was her dream man, or so she thought. She got the proposal she always wanted. Jack whisked her away to a luxurious resort by the beach where he popped the question and she said yes. However, Vickie’s life with her fiancé wasn’t the fairytale she hoped it would be.
The man who had courted her for two years had changed his attitude almost immediately after she agreed to marry him. Maybe she had turned a blind eye to the red flags while they were dating or he was really good at playing the nice guy role. They had never argued before they got engaged and she even wondered how lucky she was to meet such a perfect guy.
“He’s so good to me.” She bragged to one of her girlfriends.
“We’re so happy for you. I hope you guys end up getting married.”
“I hope so too.”
After getting engaged, they argued constantly and most times, she dreaded going home to him. She didn’t understand why he had suddenly changed his behaviour but she suspected something was going on behind her back.
“Do you think he has another woman?” She asked her friend after sharing the challenges she was experiencing.
“Jack doesn’t seem like a cheater.”
“Then what could be the issue? I have done nothing to make him angry. In fact, I go above and beyond to make sure he’s happy.”
“Be patient. Maybe he’s just stressed.”
She tried to take her friend’s advice and was nicer to Jack even when he wasn’t nice to her. At least, she was able to avoid the constant arguments with him but their relationship was still cold. Vickie didn’t feel the fire that once burned between them. Her attempts to spice up their relationship were always shut down and she felt neglected both emotionally and physically.
At her desperate moment, she scrolled through her contact list and found her ex’s number. They hadn’t talked in a while but had remained friends and would check in on each other every now and then. She remembered that Jack hated that she was still friends with her ex and hesitated to contact him fearing how her fiancé would react.
However, things between them got so bad that she was willing to risk her engagement just to feel assured that she was still a desirable woman.
“Hi, Frank. It’s been a while since we talked. How are you doing?” She messaged her ex.
A few minutes later, a message came in.
“Hi, gorgeous. I’m doing good. How is marriage life?” Frank answered
“I’m engaged, not married. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that.”
“That doesn’t sound good.”
“It’s not. I’m struggling. Can we meet up this weekend?”
“I thought your fiancé didn’t like me. Will he be fine with us hanging out?”
“He’s travelling over the weekend. I really need a friend to talk to.” She said desperately.
Frank didn’t like meeting his ex especially since Vickie’s fiancé had threatened him over the phone. However, he still had a soft spot for Vickie and he would do anything for her.
“Okay. Let’s meet at that cafe that you like.” He replied.
Vickie thought of her fiancé as she prepared to meet Frank. Even though their relationship wasn’t perfect, she still loved him and felt terrible about meeting another man behind his back. She was also concerned about Frank’s safety. If Jack found out about their meeting, who knew what he would do?
“Have a safe flight, babe.” She told her fiancé over the phone after he called to let her know he was almost boarding the plane.
“Thanks. Be a good girl, okay?”
“Of course.”
“I’ll be back soon.” These words felt like a threat to Vickie.
Nonetheless, she had to take advantage of the rare opportunity when her fiancé was out of the country to enjoy herself a little bit.
Frank noticed a significant change in Vickie’s appearance and demeanour when they met. She had lost a lot of weight and her once glowing face was dull and sunken.
“Are you okay?” He asked her.
“Yes.”
“You don’t look fine.”
After a long pause, she said, “I’m not. I don’t want to be engaged to Jack anymore. He doesn’t pay attention to me and I constantly feel like I’m not good enough for him.”
“Just end the engagement.”
“It’s not that easy. He keeps threatening that he will…”
Before she could finish speaking, her phone rang. It was Jack which she wasn’t expecting since she thought that he had already boarded the plane. She ignored the first call but he called again and then sent her a message.
“You better pick up! I know where you are.”
A few days earlier, one of Vickie’s friends who had been jealous of her perfect life called Jack and told him that she was planning to meet her ex. She even told him where they were going to meet. Jack cancelled his flight but told Vickie that he was still travelling that weekend. That night, Jack pretended that he was going to the airport but he went to a bar to kill time until Vickie left for her date with her ex. Vickie’s friend alerted him when Vickie left the house and he headed to the restaurant in a hurry.
Vickie read the message and froze with fear. Frank noticed her strange behaviour and tried to enquire what had happened.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“He’s coming here. He lied that he was travelling.”
“Your fiancé?”
“Yes.”
“We’re not going anywhere. It’s about time I confronted him about the way he has been treating you.”
Vickie was too shaken to think straight. She simply sat quietly and waited for her fiancé to get to the restaurant. After waiting for an hour, she got a phone call from his mother.
“Where are you?” His mother asked frantically.
“I’m at a restaurant with a friend.”
“Jack was involved in an accident.” Jack’s mother said then broke down in tears. “He’s dead.”
Vickie nearly had a heart attack. She would never have thought that Jack would be gone, especially under such circumstances.
“Jack is dead.” She said almost in a whisper to Frank.
He drove her to the hospital and insisted on escorting her in.
“His family will be looking for someone to blame and you need someone there to support you.”
Surprisingly, Jack’s mum didn’t ask her about Frank. They both stayed with her until she finished at the hospital and then she went back home.
However, when Jack’s mother found out that Jack had been texting Vickie that night, things changed.
“I knew you had something to do with his death. I told him that you will try to kill him so you can take his money. He should have stayed with his ex. She was better than you.” His mother said.
His entire family blamed her for his death and she wasn’t allowed to attend his funeral despite being his fiancé. However, Vickie was able to make peace with this traumatic experience and moved on.
