When my relationship with my baby daddy ended, I thought that was the end of my love life. Everyone told me that I wouldn’t be able to get a long-term partner because no man wanted to date a single mother. I believed them so I gave up on trying to find love and focused on raising my child.

Even though we had broken up, my baby daddy was always a good father and he stayed in our daughter’s life. I had to let go of any hard feelings I had towards him for the sake of our daughter. We were able to reach an understanding and co-parent without any issues. With time, we even became friends and I could count on his support when I needed it.

After two years of being single, I decided to give dating another chance. I used to hit the gym so I could lose weight and look like a young, hot woman again. I wanted to gain my confidence back. It was working and I felt good about myself. Ironically, it was at the gym that I met the man who swept me off my feet.

“I’ve seen you around for a month now.” He said as I took a break.

“Really?” I was genuinely shocked since I didn’t think anyone would notice me because of the way I looked.

“Yes. I’m David.” He introduced himself.

“I’m Sarah.”

From that day, we were inseparable. I would call him every day as I left work and he would come to pick me up to go to the gym. He was there throughout my entire fitness journey and celebrated all my small and big wins.

“I’ve lost 5 kgs since I started working out,” I told him over the phone.

“That’s amazing, babe. I’m so proud of you.”

He started dropping me home and on other days, he would take me on dates. He even met my daughter just a few weeks after our first encounter. I was hesitant to introduce him to her but he seemed like he wanted to build a serious relationship with me.

“This is David and this is Ivanna.” I introduced them.

My daughter rarely warmed up to anyone except me and her father but she greeted him with the biggest smile I had ever seen. I was surprised but happy, nonetheless.

I knew for sure that the relationship was meant to be. However, as time went by, I noticed that he never asked about my baby daddy. Maybe he thought that it was a sensitive topic or maybe he assumed that he wasn’t in my life. I decided to bring it up anyway.

“How come you have never asked me about my baby daddy, Ivanna’s dad?” I asked as we drove home.

“I didn’t know whether you wanted to talk about it.”

“Well, do you want to know about him?”

“Of course, I want to know everything about you, even your baby daddy.”

“He’s a good dad and still keeps in touch with us every now and then,” I said.

He was quiet for a minute and I could see that he was deep in thought but after the long silence, he simply nodded his head in agreement. That was the first and last time he ever asked about him.

After a few months of courtship, he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. We started spending more time together which meant that he was bound to meet my baby daddy sooner or later.

They met at Ivanna’s fifth birthday party. My baby daddy never missed any big event in my daughter’s life and this was no different. He helped plan everything and let me know that he would be there. On the other hand, David and I had been dating for almost a year and he had become really close with my daughter. There was no way he was going to miss her birthday.

The two men finally came face to face and things went surprisingly well. I could tell that David wasn’t a fan of my baby daddy but he kept calm. When the day was over, Ivanna went to stay with her dad that day and David decided to treat me to a staycation.

It turned out to be a proposal.

“Will you marry me?” He asked on one knee holding a shiny diamond ring.

“Yes, I will,” I answered and sealed it with a passionate kiss.

“I have to tell Ivanna’s dad,” I said.

David let out an angry sigh and then gave me a look that sent chills through my body. I even forgot that I wanted to call my baby daddy to tell him the good news and share it with our daughter.

Being engaged didn’t go as I hoped. David was constantly talking bad about my baby daddy and pressuring me to cut him off.

“I love Ivanna but things can’t work out if you keep talking to her dad. The man isn’t the saint he pretends to be. If he was such a good man, why didn’t he stay with you and his daughter?” He ranted.

At first, I thought he was just a little jealous that I was friends with my baby daddy but after he started suggesting that I should cut him off, I knew our relationship couldn’t work out.

“It’s better to end it now.” My mother advised me.

I thought about it for a couple of days and eventually decided to call off my engagement. As I expected, David wasn’t too happy about it.

“You’re picking your baby daddy over me?” He asked angrily. “This is why people don’t like single mothers but I thought you were different. You’re just as backwards as the rest and you’ll be single forever.”

Things ended so horribly that I had to move to another apartment because I was scared that he would come back and attack me. Thankfully, my baby daddy was there for me and took care of Ivanna as I looked for another place. I don’t think that I will be trying to date any time soon if those are the calibre of men around.
