It’s really a small world. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve run into an ex or worse, someone I ghosted. However, these encounters always ended peacefully. I would either completely ignore the guy or say hi and keep moving. I know that tension can run high when you encounter your ex hence my cautious approach. William had a different view which I had a problem with. While I kept my ex at arm’s length, he kept in close touch with his ex.

He used to tell me the classic “she’s just a friend” lie. Since I’m not a dramatic person, I accepted it and didn’t insist on it. They kept in touch and at some point, he used to refer to her as his best friend. He even used to send her money when she asked. I found out about it when I saw her messages asking for Ksh 2,000 then saw her thanking him afterwards.

Sure, his ex was really beautiful and at times, I used to tease him about how he lost a baddie. However, I thought he would get over it with time and he would be grateful for our relationship. It wasn’t happening as fast as I thought.

Instead of letting it bother me, I decided to focus on my relationship and make sure that William felt like I was the best thing that ever happened to him. That was the only way he would forget about his ex and focus on me. I became his support system and it seemed to work. Within a few months, our relationship was thriving.

Even though he still talked to his ex, they slowly started to drift apart. I stopped hearing her name all the time and most importantly, they didn’t chat over the phone anymore. Finally, William was all mine.

“You don’t talk to Vivian anymore,” I commented cheekily.

“Leave that girl alone. I tried to help her but she’s just like all the other girls. I’m just lucky that you’re different.”

Our relationship was thriving for some time and I thought I had nothing to worry about. William even used to brag to his friends that I was his best friend and when anyone brought up his ex, he would shut them down.

“Vivian was asking about you.” One of his friends told him.

“I don’t want to hear that name ever again. I’m with Fiona now.”

“I think she’s moved on too. I heard she has a new boyfriend.”

William didn’t say anything but I noticed a change in his demeanor after that. Once again, I chose to ignore these obvious signs that he wasn’t over his ex and believed that I had a perfect relationship.

Some of his friends even tried to warn me.

“William and Vivian have a close bond. They always keep reconciling after breaking up.” He said.

“I don’t think they’ll get back together this time, though, We’ve been together for more than 7 months,” I answered.

“Fine, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I soon found out that William and Vivian were still talking to each other. In fact, it was William who contacted Vivian. I felt betrayed but I didn’t suspect anything sinister. After all, they had been in contact before and nothing happened. When I confronted him about it, William came clean.

“I wanted to check up on her and she needed some help.”

“Some help? You mean, money?”

“She’s someone I used to care about. Do you want me to just let her suffer?”

“Doesn’t she have a boyfriend to borrow money from?”

“She does but her boyfriend doesn’t treat her well.”

“So it’s your job to treat her well.”

“It’s not like that.”

William swore that he was over her and that he didn’t want anything to do with her. He assured me that he was simply helping her as a friend. However, the truth was about to reveal itself.

By sheer coincidence, we ran into Vivian and her boyfriend at a popular restaurant. I had never met Vivian face to face but I knew what she looked like from photos. In fact, I was the one who spotted her.

“Is that Vivian?” I asked William while looking in her direction.

William couldn’t see them since his back was facing the entrance. However, they walked past us and he got a glimpse of the couple.

“It’s her.” He said as if he was also trying to confirm if he was right.

They were so busy with each other that they didn’t notice we were seated a few tables away from them. However, William couldn’t keep his eyes off the two from the moment he saw them. He stood up from our table and I thought he was going to the washroom but he walked straight to Vivian and her boyfriend.

When I noticed that he was talking to Vivian, I went to try and calm him down.

“I thought you said you had broken up with this guy.” He said.

“We’re working things out.” She explained, slightly confused.

“He doesn’t even treat you well but you’ve given him more chances than me.”

The other guy was getting irritated by William and stood up to tell him off. However, William ignored the guy and continued talking to Vivian.

“You deserve so much better.” He said.

“Who are you?” The other guy asked.

“I’m her ex. I care about Vivian very much and she complains to me when you break her heart.”

“Why are you so concerned with your ex? Don’t you have a girlfriend?”

William realized that I was standing behind him and he turned to me.

“Go back to our table. I’ll be right there.” He said.

“I’m not going anywhere. How dare you humiliate me like this when I have been nothing but good to you?” I protested.

He tried to explain himself but it was obvious that he still had feelings for his ex. We went home together but I didn’t want to be in a relationship with him anymore. Shortly after we broke up, William got back together with his ex.
