Have you ever met someone and had an instant connection with them? I wasn’t one to believe in love at first sight but when I met Cindy, it felt like I knew her for all my life. It was a beautiful feeling that led to giddy late-night phone calls and flirty messages. I fell in love with her quickly and even thought that I would spend the rest of my life with her. However, that blissful feeling would turn to agony after finding out that Cindy and I were related.

“Where are you from?” I asked

“Kiambu.” She answered.

“Me too.”

“Is that where your grandparents live?”

“Yes, my father is from a village called Kairi.”

“Really? That’s where my mother comes from.” She answered.

I didn’t think much of it since I had met people who had come from my village. In fact, I liked that she was from my area and that we had a lot in common. It was something we bonded over.

When I introduced her to my friends, the first thing they noticed was how much we looked alike and hinted that we could be related. I hadn’t noticed it and I assumed my friends were joking. After all, people always joke about finding out that their soulmate is related to them. However, I did have a very unique look and if someone looked like me, there was a high chance we came from the same family.

After that encounter, it started to hit me that we could be related. I started getting nervous since I had very strong feelings for Cindy and I wanted her to be mine forever. Additionally, we had already been intimate and if we were related, that could be an issue.

“Just ask your parents. They will know if you’re related or not.” My friend advised me after I opened up about my concerns.

“It’s a bit embarrassing, though,” I confessed.

“There’s no other way.”

“I can just ignore everybody and continue living my life.”

“You’ll always be in doubt. Plus, it’s better to find out now than later.”

I gave it some thought and decided to go with my friend’s advice. However, I still felt that if my parents knew exactly why I wanted to know our family tree, it would make them anxious. So I asked my mum to help me but didn’t tell her why I was doing it.

She was happy to help since she got to spend time with me and talk about our family.

“This is your uncle, Sam. You met him a few times when you were young but we hardly see that side of the family anymore.” She explained pointing at a picture in her photo album.

“Why not?”

“That’s your grandfather’s other family. You know he had three wives. That’s one of my half-siblings.” She explained.

I didn’t know that my grandfather was polygamous. He had died when we were very young and my mother hardly spoke about him. However, if he was polygamous, it meant that there was an even higher chance that Cindy was related to me.

We kept looking through the picture when one of them caught my eye. It was a picture of the same uncle with me and a young girl beside him. I knew it wasn’t my sister since she was older than me and the girl in the picture looked younger than me.

“Who is this?” I asked, pointing at her.

“That is your cousin, Uncle Sam’s daughter.”

For some reason, I had a strong feeling that it was Cindy. She looked nothing like her but I couldn’t shake that feeling.

“Can we go and visit Uncle Sam?”

“We can but I haven’t seen him in a while. We don’t get along because of my father’s inheritance.”

“I think it’s time to put those differences aside.”

“Why do you want to know this side of the family so much?”

“I told you I had a dream about it. Besides, we’re all related and we should know each other before we end up marrying our relative.”

My mother and I headed to my uncle’s place that weekend. We stopped by the supermarket to buy something for him so he could be more welcoming. When we got there, we met him sitting outside his house enjoying the afternoon sun.

“How are you, sir?” I asked.

“I’m fine.” He answered cautiously.

Then my mother emerged from behind me and he immediately recognized her.

“Charity? Is that you?”

“Yes, Sam. It’s me. We’ve come to visit you.”

He was surprisingly happy to see my mum and welcomed us with a cup of tea as is customary in my region.

“Wow. I thought I would never see you.”

“I thought so too but my son insisted we should visit you.”

“You have done well, my son.”

We handed him the shopping bag and then went inside the house.

“I’m happy to see you, Uncle Sam, but I have some questions for you.”

“Of course. What do you need?”

My mother gave me a puzzled look. She still didn’t know the real reason I wanted to meet my uncle.

“There’s a girl I met a few months ago and fell in love with her. However, everyone keeps saying that we look alike. She’s also from this village which made me think that we could be related.” I explained.

My mother almost choked on her tea but she managed to stay quiet as my uncle and I talked.

“That’s quite unfortunate but I hope the two of you aren’t related. Do you have a picture of her? Maybe I know her relatives.”

Luckily, I had Cindy’s picture on my phone which I showed to the old man. I will never forget the look on his face after he saw her. He was speechless for a few minutes as he stared at the picture.

“Are you sure this is the girl?”

“Yes. Her name is Cindy. Do you know her?”

“Yes, that is my daughter.” He answered.

For some reason, I wasn’t surprised. It’s like I knew she was related to me all along. Maybe I was in denial or I was simply excited to meet someone I felt strongly about. However, the cat was out of the bag and I had to end the relationship.

When I broke the news to Cindy, she wasn’t happy that I went behind her back and even got her father involved. Nonetheless, she was thankful that I found out that we were related before it was too late. We remained good friends and kept the whole ordeal to ourselves.
