In recent years, the societal perception of marijuana has shifted drastically from being stigmatized as a dangerous drug to becoming more widely accepted and even legalized in several countries. As research into the effects of marijuana continues to grow, many myths surrounding the drug are being dispelled, and evidence is mounting to suggest that it is less harmful than previously believed. As a result, many people are now embracing marijuana as a legitimate form of medicine, a recreational pastime, and an alternative to more harmful substances. If you are counted among those who use this herb and for whatever reason find that you need to come down from a high fast, this one is for you.

Factors that affect the duration of a high

THC tolerance: everyday weed smokers have a higher tolerance and will sober up faster than those who are just dabbling.

Biochemistry: every individual has varying chemical and biochemical processes occurring in their body which affects the duration of their high. Body weight, body fat percentage, metabolism and whether or not you’ve already eaten also play a role.

Potency: different strains of cannabis have different potencies.

Method of consumption: smoking leads to faster absorption and faster highs while orally ingested ones take longer as they travel through the digestive system. Dried flowers can last anywhere between one and three hours and edibles can keep you blissed out for anywhere between 4 and 12 hours depending on the amount consumed.

Dosage: The more you consume the longer you will be high.

How to sober up fast

Say your mom calls to say she’s coming over and you’re high as a kite, here are a few things you can do to sober up fast:

Distract yourself

Don’t panic. Instead, do something – meditate, dance, juggle- anything to take your mind off your high status. A good distraction will take your mind away from focusing on how high you are and how desperately you want to be sober and can help being to sober you up.

Get caffeinated

Caffeine is great for trying to sober up from any substance, including weed. Cannabis can cause fogginess, fatigue and short-term memory loss. Caffeine boosts energy levels, recollection, and overall alertness. Chugging coffee won’t immediately eliminate your high but it will counteract the least desirable effects and move you closer to sobriety.

Exercise

Exercise increases blood flow throughout your body, including your brain effectively flushing the high right out of your head. So go for a quick jog to flush out that high.

Adrenaline rush

Nothing sobers you up fast quite like an adrenaline rush. Ask any stoner who’s ever come face to face with an unexpected cop just how fast-acting adrenaline is. Inducing an adrenaline rush can be cheap and easy from watching a scary movie to introducing yourself to a stranger.

Sleep it off

This is not a fast way to sober up but is one of the most effective ways to do it. Nap your way through the worst of it and wake up sober. In some instances if you took edibles you could wake up higher, if this happens, try try again and go back to sleep. The second time’s the charm.

How to reduce your high

Say you’ve eaten too many weed edibles and need to decrease your high, you could:

Cold shower

A cold shower can be just the sobering jolt your body needs. Research shows that taking a cold shower can increase alertness, eliminate fatigue and decrease anxiety, all of which are side effects of a cannabis high.

Chew black peppercorn

Black peppercorn has the ability to provide near-instant relief for people overcome by cannabis-induced paranoia or anxiety. Add some black peppercorns to your snack if you are afraid of getting a bad high.

CBD

Taking cannabidiol (CBD) can help balance the intoxicating effects of THC in weed thus mellowing out your high.

Bite lemon

Bite into a lemon to reduce your high. Lemon has properties that reduce high reduced anxiety and the scent can give you good vibes. Smelling pine seeds can also help bring you down to earth.

Stay hydrated and eat a snack

Water is the answer to many of life’s problems. Constantly drinking water prevents the cottonmouth or dry mouth feeling and also reduces the overall high effect. Munching on snacks and drinking water also work to keep you grounded and in touch with reality which can decrease the high feeling.

Ibuprofen

Certain anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can offset the intoxicating effects of weed and reduce its adverse effects on cognition.
