My boyfriend always swore that he would love me no matter what I looked like. I’m the textbook definition of a baddie. I had a nice body, I always rock long wigs and wear the trendiest clothes. He really hit the jackpot when he bagged me. However, he insisted that he wasn’t attracted to my looks like the other guys. In fact, he made me so comfortable in my skin that I decided to shave my hair.
Before I shaved my hair, I started to tone down my style to a more natural look since my boyfriend preferred it.
“I like more natural girls.” He said.
I still looked good with less makeup and toned-down nails and my boyfriend was happy with the look. So, I embraced my natural look. However, I couldn’t let go of my wigs. They were a staple for me since I didn’t have the best natural hair. My hair was thin and my hairline was struggling. In fact, my hairline was so bad that people used to make fun of me when I was in high school. So, as soon as I finished high school I started rocking wigs.
My boyfriend wasn’t fond of the wigs but I managed to convince him that it was just like my natural hair.
“I can rock kinky wigs that match my natural hair,” I suggested.
“Okay, but I still think natural hair is the best.”
I had to change my entire collection of wigs from bone straight 24 inches to curly, full-body ones. They still looked good but it took some time to get used to them. Additionally, they were more uncomfortable sleeping in due to their volume. My boyfriend had the same issue with them. However, I insisted that I had no other options.
“I can’t remove the wig. It’s glued to my head.” I explained.
“Why don’t you stop wearing wigs?” He asked.
I resisted his suggestion for a long time until I started noticing that it was affecting my relationship. My boyfriend stopped complimenting me and instead complained about the wigs. I knew sooner or later, I would have to ditch the wigs and show my real hair. However, I believed that my boyfriend loved me unconditionally and he would love me even after I showed him my natural hair. After all, he was a big advocate of being natural.
I had to check in with my friends and they were not happy about the pressure that my boyfriend was putting on me.
“If he really loves you the way you are, then he would love your style. That’s who you are.” One of them said
“Haven’t you already compromised enough for him? I mean, look at you. You look nothing as you used to.” Another said.
I hadn’t realized how much I had changed until my friend pointed it out. To me, I looked the same if not better but to them, I looked broke. However, I was so focused on making my boyfriend happy and proving that I was beautiful no matter what I did that I continued changing my look.
“I want to shave my hair.” I finally said.
There was a loud gasp and a long silence. My two best friends were one of the few people who knew what my natural hair looked like. We always went to the salon together so they’ve seen me without a wig many times.
“You’re not serious, are you?”
“I’m so serious.”
“Is he making you do this?”
“No, I’m just tired of the wigs.” I lied.
“Has he seen you without a wig?”
“No, but he loves me for me, not how I look.”
“I think it’s a mistake.”
Despite their protests, my mind was already made up. I wanted a haircut and I was going to get a haircut. I just needed their support. They were kind enough to take me to the salon but were still trying to talk me out of it the entire way there.
We finally got to the salon and I explained that I wanted a haircut. I got the same reception as I had from my friends. Again, my stylist tried to talk me out of it but I insisted. She removed my wig and inspected my hair.
“Your hairline is getting worse.” She said.
“I know, I want to start taking care of my natural hair.”
“Whatever you want.” She said then called the barber.
An hour later, I was bald and regretting my decision. I stared at myself in the mirror in disbelief. I looked nothing like the baddie I was just a few months ago. However, I was still determined to prove that I was beautiful regardless and that my boyfriend would love me.
“Do you want us to install a wig?” My stylist asked.
“No, it’s okay.”
I took an Uber home and waited for my boyfriend to come back so I could surprise him with my new look. However, I asked my friends to stay around just in case things didn’t go well.
My boyfriend came back from work at his usual time but he was met by a bald girlfriend. He was visibly stunned.
“Babe, do you like my new look?”
He was silent for a minute but could hardly make eye contact with me.
“What happened?” He finally asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Your hair. What happened to your hair?” He asked
“I shaved it.”
“So this is what you were hiding underneath your wigs. You look like a hairless cat.” He said and laughed but no one else was laughing with him.
We all just sat in silence as he laughed hysterically.
“I knew these so-called baddies all look like village girls when the makeup and wigs come off.” He said to himself.
I asked my friends to leave so I could talk to my boyfriend in private. After they left, I confronted him about embarrassing me in front of my friends.
“I told them that you were different and that you didn’t care how I looked,” I said almost in tears.
“You were wrong. I know I said I like natural girls but I meant natural beauties. You look scary. I can’t even go out with you in public.”
He continued to attack my looks and when I tried to calm him down, he only got more aggressive. I had never seen him that angry before. I didn’t even think he could be that abusive. He had always been so nice to me. He eventually broke up with me and kicked me out.
I went back for my things a week later and found another girl in his apartment. She had long acrylic nails, a long lace wig and a face full of makeup. I tried to warn her that he’ll try to change her appearance but she dismissed me.
Despite the traumatic experience, I continued to rock my natural look. It took a while to get used to it but I’ve gotten used to my short hair now and I’ve grown to like it. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter to me.
