Last month TECNO launched the TECNO Phantom X2 series phone which was the first photo to feature a retractable portrait lens. The TECNO Phantom X2 is a high-end brand.
Some of the key features are
A 64MP main camera with a state-of-the-art RGBW sensor and 5P+1G lens
.5x optical zoom retractable portrait lens
An eco-friendly microfiber back cover made from recycled plastics
A MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 4nm 5G chip
A unibody double curved build and a lunar crater design
The TECNO Phantom X2 comes with a 24+1 month warranty and 90 Day free broken screen replacement.
We got hold of the TECNO Phantom X2 Series 5G phone. This is what we loved about it.
Here is what is in the box.
- TECNO Phantom X2 handset
- 45W charger
- USB-A to USB-C charging cable
- Earphones with in-line microphone and USB-C connector
- Hard case with kickstand
- SIM ejector tool
Unique Unibody Double-Curved Design and Lunar Craters
The TECNO Phantom X2 phone is a beautiful phone. It looks good both from the front to the back and is very stylish. It has a slim look and sharp edges have been eliminated for comfortable use.
Performance
The Tecno Phantom x2 is powered by the MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 5G Chip. This allows users to have a very smooth experience when using the phone. I liked that I was able to switch easily between my emails, social media and watching movies with ease. The user experience is very smooth.
Display and performance
The display is bright enough and there is also as a high-brightness mode for even clearer viewing under strong light. Eye care mode is available so that you do not strain your eyes and the Phantom X2’s screen offers 60Hz, 120Hz, and auto-switch refresh rate modes. If you watch a lot of youtube like me it runs 2160p HDR content quite smoothly. Even though the phone measures nearly 9mm it does not feel thick because of the curvy design. It is not bulky at all. You can use the case as a stand and this allows you to be able to watch your movies or youtube very easily without straining by having to hold the device. This was very helpful for me because I tend to watch movies on my phone.
According to TECNO, the phone has a vapour chamber cooling system which prevents it from overheating. Considering I have used this device primarily to watch movies and take videos and photos I have not encountered overheating.
The operating system has various features which are helpful like the kids’ mode, OneLeap which allows you to pair with a laptop and data share, and do a multiscreen collaboration, as well as other features like video assistant, multiwindow, smart panel, always on display and call recording features.
Battery
The battery is one of the things I love about this phone. The battery can last more than a day on a full charge if you are not doing heavy tasks like watching movies or creating content and it charges in around 73 minutes for a full charge. Of course with heavy usage when taking videos and pictures you will have to charge more often. But even with content creation the battery power is still excellent.
The TECNO PHANTOM X2 has a 5160mAh battery which when it eventually needs charging, a quick boost with rapid 45W flash charging helps.
Cameras
I tend to use the camera a lot for taking pictures and videos of myself, events, family, and also food. The camera was perfect for that. For selfies, there was the 32MP selfie camera. For the main cameras, there is a 64MP main, 2MP depth and 13MP ultrawide. HerFor video recording for the main camera, it is capped at 4K 60fps for both too while selfie videos are limited to 1080p 60fps.
The camera app has various shooting modes – portrait, super night, AI camera, video, film, documents, and google lens. This phone did not have Pro Mode.
The camera app offers shooting modes, such as AI camera, portrait, super night, video, film, documents (scanner), AR shot, slow motion, panorama, timelapse, sky shop, dual video, and Google Lens. The Pro mode is not available.
The video modes are original, professional, teal and orange, prairie, black gold, monochrome, etosha, Mauritius and daydream. There are film modes like performance which are used to record performances, singing, and dancing. Travel is good for capturing scenes and moments. Vintage for shooting vintage videos. Family, where you can record a family and get-together. Street to capture moving people and traffic. Other modes include superstar, beats, sports, party and motion for shooting video clips for a few seconds. The TECNO Phantom X2 is a content creator’s dream because it would allow you to do multiple types of shoots without having a professional camera.
The main camera takes great shots during the day with good dynamic range. The portrait shots come out well with or without background blur.
I love the AI cameras which take good pictures with or without the AI. The phone performs well in low light conditions and you will get realistic colours but you can also use the Super Night Mode which takes a few seconds to capture a shot.
I am still experimenting with the camera so hopefully, I will get to use the video modes in shoots. But so far so good.

Other things
The only issue I had was that it only had one speaker. But the sound is very ok considering it has DTS Sound support. It also has an FM radio but you still have to use a Type C earphone to act as the antenna. I wonder when it will be possible to get away with listening to the radio without having earphones.
The key things were the eye-catching design, great photography experience and good performance. A secondary speaker would have been nice, especially for those of us who like to use the phone to watch movies.
