Abuse of antibiotic drugs has led to an increase in cases of super gonorrhea, Drug-resistant gonorrhea, also known as “super-gonorrhea,” is a strain of the bacteria that causes gonorrhea that is resistant to the antibiotics traditionally used to treat the infection. This can make it more difficult to treat and can increase the risk of complications. Doctors have been talking about the dangers of overusing antibiotics or not completing doses and now we can see some of the results.
An alarm has been raised that super gonorrhea is now in Nairobi. KEMRI, the Kenya Medical Research Institute said they discovered they discovered drug-resistant gonorrhea when it was isolated from a sample taken from one of 24 sick sex workers in the city last year. The most concerning thing is that many of the sick women did not even have the clinical symptoms of the disease.
Update 08/04/2023 Super Gonorrhea
Two new strains of gonorrhoea and chlamydia have been discovered by scientists at KEMRI and Kenyans have been warned to be vigilant. These new strains were discovered following an inquiry into Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in 2 hospitals in Busia County.
424 women aged 15 and above were sampled from the two hospitals and all the samples were positive for gonorrhea and chlamydia. There is still research to be done to find out how many of these women were using protection and their history with antibiotics. Also to find out if these women have had similar infections before. Busia being a border town means that the mutations will spread between Kenya and Uganda.
The mutations are resistant to antibiotics. It seems that the mutations of gonorrhea and chlamydia were attacking as a pair and this makes this even more dangerous.
Painful urination
Discharge from the penis or vagina
Painful or swollen testicles (in men)
Anal itching or discharge (in both men and women)
Pain in the lower abdomen.
However, it’s important to note that many people with gonorrhea have no symptoms at all. This is why it’s important to practice safe sex and get tested regularly, especially if you have multiple partners or a new sexual partner.
If left untreated, super gonorrhea can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and even sepsis so it is important that as soon as you notice the symptoms you seek treatment.
If you suspect that you have gonorrhea, it’s important to see a doctor for testing and treatment. If the infection is caused by a drug-resistant strain, your doctor may need to use a different antibiotic or a combination of antibiotics. In some cases, a longer course of treatment may be needed.
It’s also important to inform any sexual partners that you have had recently so they can also get tested and treated. This will help to prevent the spread of the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
It’s also important to practice safer sex, such as using condoms, to reduce the risk of getting or spreading gonorrhea. And regularly get tested if you have multiple partners or a new sexual partner.
