Cleaning is one of those annoying endless tasks that we have no choice but to engage in which is why so many cleaning hacks to make it easier abound. Some of those hacks though just don’t work. Here are some of the most common ones that do not live up to the hype.
1. Prevent dye bleeding by adding salt
There’s a widespread belief that adding salt to the washer or your cleaning water prevents dye bleeding. This just doesn’t work, fabric that bleeds will bleed because of the manufacturing process.
2. Coca-cola toilet cleaner
Coca-cola has been touted as the mix that can clean everything. Yes, it is an efficient rust remover but no, it cannot disinfect and clean germs, so no, don’t pour it down your toilet. Get a disinfectant cleaner for your bathroom and drink the coke, if you must.
3. Hot water germ killer
There’s a widespread belief that hot water kills all germs. Hot water made in the house cannot get to the heat levels required to kill all bacteria. So to disinfect your house and keep yourself safe from germs and their friends, go for a disinfectant like chlorine or Lysol.
4. More detergent = cleaner
It makes sense to assume that the more disinfectant your use the cleaner the surface or your clothes will be. This isn’t always the case. When using a washing machine, for example, excessive suds can damage the washing machine’s pump and drain and can also redeposit soil onto the clothing. Stick to the recommended amount of detergent. Alternatively, use better-quality detergent.

5. Newspapers for cleaning windows and glass
This was once true. In the past, newspapers were thicker and the material used made it easier to use to polish glass surfaces. Today’s papers however are different. They are thinner and the newsprint will redistribute grime and leave black ink on mirrors and windows.
6. Baking soda and vinegar
About baking soda and vinegar… they can’t do it all. The combination of baking soda and vinegar is treated almost like a magical solution that can defeat any and all dirt and with good reason, they really are the power couple. Still, the mix can’t be used as an all-purpose cleaner because it does not have a lot of cleaning power. It also does not remove germs. You’ll need a disinfectant for that. Use the mix for specific purposes like unclogging drains which it does well.
