Ashwagandha, also known as winter cherry, is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. The herb is an essential part of Ayurveda medicine, a traditional alternative medicine used in India. Ashwagandha has been known to treat and reduce symptoms of various health conditions. Here are some of the benefits of the herb to your body.

Benefits Of Ashwagandha

1. Promotes Heart Health

Ashwagandha has many benefits for the heart. It is effective in dealing with chest pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and other heart diseases. Regular intake of ashwagandha can go a long way in helping you to maintain a healthy heart.  What You Need To Know About Hypertension And High Blood Pressure

2. Natural Remedy for Ulcers

Stress not only affects your mental state, but it can also put you at a high risk of getting ulcers. The best part about adding ashwagandha to your diet is that it not only helps to treat ulcers but also reduces the risk. You can use the herb by itself or combined with other herbs that reduce gastric acid in the stomach.

3. It Helps to Lower Blood Sugar

Ashwagandha helps to regulate insulin in the body. It stimulates insulin secretion in the bloodstream by helping the body break down sugars in the blood. This ensures that the harmful sugars are not being stored in your body.  Health: 5 Organic Plants That Help With Diabetes

4. Sexual Stimulant and balancing hormones.

When it comes to sexual function, ashwagandha is a magical herb. It helps to improve arousal, lubrication, satisfaction and orgasms for women The herb also strengthens the adrenal glands and increases the production of blood. 5. It Helps to Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is often a response to infections or harmful toxins in the body. Naturally, the body produces an anti-inflammatory response to restore balance. However, when you are in chronic pain, the body has a hard time doing so. This is where ashwagandha comes in. It assists the body in reducing inflammation.

6. Improves Focus and Memory

Ashwagandha helps to improve cognitive functions and memory, especially in older adults who are often at risk of developing cognitive impairment. The herb is also one of the best natural treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

7. Energy Boost

On days when you struggle to remain focused or to go about your daily activities, ashwagandha can help boost your energy. It helps the body sustain and reserve energy throughout the day.

8. Boosts Testosterone Levels in Men

Ashwagandha has been used traditionally to improve fertility in men. It stimulates and regulates testosterone generation in the body. Studies show that the herb also contains withanolides that help improve sperm count. However, it is best to consult your doctor before using the herb for fertility purposes.

9. Improves Sleep

If you constantly struggle to sleep at night, ashwagandha is the best remedy. It contains sleep-inducing properties that help you sleep soundly and promote mental alertness.

10. Relieves Stress and Anxiety

Ashwagandha is perhaps the best natural remedy for stress and anxiety. It is considered an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body cope with stress, anxiety and depression symptoms.

How to Consume Ashwagandha

You can purchase ashwagandha as a supplement capsule/tablet, powder or in tea form. The best way to introduce the herb to your body would be through tea. However, it depends on what you would like to use it for.

If you would like to get creative, you can purchase the powder and add it to your everyday diet. It could be a smoothie, juice, food or even milk. You can also use it in your recipes if you use the lowest heat. Exposing the powder to excess heat could end up reducing its nutritional value.

Potential Side Effects

Ashwagandha is considered safe for consumption; however, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is not advisable to use it. You should also avoid it if you have type 1 diabetes, arthritis or if you are scheduled for a surgical procedure. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are on any medication before purchasing ashwagandha and if you have any side effects after ingesting the herb.

The potential side effects are diarrhoea, nausea, gastrointestinal issues or vomiting. Ashwagandha is an excellent addition to meals; however, it is good to remember that too much of anything can be harmful to your body. 500grams twice a day is all you need.
