When Betty first laid her eyes on Andrew she knew instantly that she’d met ‘the man’. At the time Andrew was subtly charming, the perfect depiction of the middle-class bachelor. Betty on the other hand had just completed law school and secured a job at the law firm she interned at. Things were going great for her, she’d moved her mom to a nice house with her first salary and moved to a new house too. She was feeling stable, her career had just kick-started and it was going really well. So when she met Andrew 4 years later it was like he was the last piece of the puzzle.
Andrew had walked in that day in search of a corporate lawyer. He was starting a business venture and needed advice related to business transactions and planning. This happened to be Betty’s area of expertise and a meeting was set.
“Hello, I am Betty. I will be your lawyer,” she said.
“Andrew, nice to meet you,” he replied while shaking her hand with his eyes firmly locked on hers.
After the meeting, Andrew made his first move. A couple of days later they went on a date. One thing led to the other in less than a month the two were in a relationship.
Betty was happy, she was falling too deep too fast. She knew in her heart she would do anything for this man. When Betty realized that Andrew was struggling with funds to start up his business, she took out her savings and invested in his business venture. Lucky for them, the business picked up in less than two months. The business was booming and Andrew was making good money.
“Babe, move in with me,” he said to her casually one night while they were on a date.
“Are you serious?” she asked in asked.
“I am. We have a good relationship and business is great, I want you to live with me,” he reassured her.
Betty felt like her dreams had come true. She didn’t even think twice about it.
Soon after Betty moved in she started noticing things she didn’t before about Andrew. He was controlling but Betty convinced herself that he was simply an alpha male and she even found it sexy. She was in love and that in her mind justified every other thing. After a while, Andrew asked Betty to quit her job since they were already making enough money and he wanted to take care of her. Betty didn’t fully like the idea of quitting her career but things were going so well that she dreaded to change that so she accepted and she quit her job.
Betty’s friends started warning her about Andrew and that things were going so fast and she was doing too much. She did not listen though she still was blinded by her love for Andrew. However, things started changing, Andrew would come back home so late at first then he wouldn’t at all. When she asked he always came up with the excuse that he had a meeting with a client somewhere or too much work. Betty knew he was lying it was very clear. She found receipts from hotels where he’d slept or odd messages from girls. She knew he was cheating with multiple women. Betty stayed up late wondering what to do. She couldn’t bring herself to do anything about it though until she started getting sick. Her visits to her gynaecologist became more often; an infection here syphilis there all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases.
Betty confronted Andrew a number of times but every time he denied the accusation of cheating. Betty knew that having Andrew in her life meant everything to her and she did not know how to convince herself to give up on that. Slowly her mental health started declining. Andrew did not seem to care much about what was going on with her, whether she ate or slept was sick. All that seemed to matter to him was his business and the very many women he had out there. He felt unstoppable.
Andrew became so much of a jerk he stopped hiding the fact that he was cheating. Betty stayed up late at night thinking, wondering if he disrespected her so much because she tolerated his cheating. She still found a way to blame herself for him being an *******.
One Friday morning, she received a call from her aunt to travel back to her ancestral home for a family function since her cousin was getting married and she had to be there. She invited Andrew and of course, he had an excuse for work so she saw no need to pressure him over the same and so she left for home, little did she know she would find a rude shock when she goes back. She was to remain home for at least a week and made sure she had left Andrew enough cooked food and anything he would need when she was away, little did she know she was cooking also for her ‘co-wife’.
Andrew had brought in another lady in the absence of Betty and as bad luck would have it Betty would only stay home for a day and come back. On Saturday evening, Betty arrived home late at night, since her phone battery had been drained, she did not call Andrew. She opened the door and there in the sitting room was her man, Andrew, and another girl, all naked and it does not require a brainer to know what had transpired or was happening.
“Babe I can explain,” he said.
She rushed out of the house and Andrew pushed her to the wall near the gate. She tried resisting and screaming and Andrew began beating her up and roughing her just because she was screaming and calling for help. Neighbours came to her rescue. She had to move out. She had lost all sense of worth in herself but somehow she also found something to keep her moving. Betty had now seen it face to face so there was no denying he was cheating. She had studied Andrew long enough to know that that was the end and he would never change. Betty had no idea how to navigate the rest of her life. Falling in love with Andrew had caused her so much pain and left scars that would never heal. Cheating, she could forgive but a cheating and a battering boyfriend was a no for her.
