I was on a high when I moved out from home into my first apartment. It felt like I was starting a new life. All the mistakes I had made before seemed to have gone away magically. I promised myself to make better life decisions since I didn’t want to go back to the life I used to live. It didn’t take long for me to settle in the new apartment, make new friends and even get a new boyfriend.
A month into living at the new place, the management organized a party to officially open the apartment. It was a wild night and that’s where I met Drew. He came up to me rather over confidently but I was a little drunk so I thought it was the sexiest thing ever. Looking back, I cringe at the events of that night.
“Hi. I’m Drew and this is Leo.” He said introducing his friend.
“Oh my God!! Are you guys twins?” I asked excitedly
“No, but we’re related. He’s my cousin.”
I later came to find out that it was a lie and they weren’t even remotely related. However, I was pretty excited to meet two attractive guys. I took a liking to Leo more and I gave him my number that night. We chatted briefly the following day before I got a text from Drew.
“Can you come to my place?” He asked.
“Sure.”
I was pretty idle in my house and I wanted to make as many friends as I could. So, I went to his apartment where I found him eagerly waiting.
We got to know each other better and I slowly started liking him more. He was more talkative and flirtier than Leo which was exactly what I liked in a man. He asked me to be his girlfriend and I agreed.
Later that day, Leo called me in a fury.
“Is Drew your boyfriend?” He asked
“What?” I was puzzled.
“He said that he’s your boyfriend and the two of you even kissed.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I’ve seen your texts.” He said then hung up.
I then received a series of texts from him telling me that I had betrayed him. He came to my house later in the night to apologize for his outburst and I got to see a different side of him. I ended up forming a closer friendship with him than I did with Drew. However, Drew was still a better boyfriend or so I thought.
“Be careful with him. He’s not who you think he is.” Leo warned me.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s a liar.”
Well, that wasn’t anything new. I had dealt with liars all my life and I knew how to spot a lie. However, I wasn’t ready for the experience I had with Drew.
The first month of our dating was pretty ordinary. He had a business so he was out and about every day. The times when we were not together, he’d call or send a text. He’d even order food to be delivered to me and would send me money every now and then. This took me by surprise since there weren’t many men my age who gave their girlfriends money. During the weekends, we’d go out to different places.
He quickly became my favourite person and earned a lot of boyfriend points. However, the only thing that seemed off was that he drove a really nice BMW X5. I was suspicious about it at first but he assured me that it was his mother’s car.
I didn’t think much of it. He had shown me pictures of his family home so I knew he came from a wealthy family.
A few days after our last date, he came to visit me and I could see that he had bruises and cuts all over his body.
“What happened to you?”
“I was in an accident.” He answered, brushing it off.
As always, I accepted whatever explanation he gave. Leo had warned me that he was a liar but so far, I couldn’t tell when or whether he was lying.
Word started going around that he had actually been in a fight with another guy after he found him in his sugar mummy’s car. My boyfriend had a sugar mummy! When I heard the story, I almost collapsed. It never occurred to me that he was dating a sugar mummy. However, his whole life unfolded in front of my eyes.
It turned out that the business he was always attending to was actually his sugar mummy’s business. The car was his sugar mummy’s and the money that I enjoyed from him came from her.
I felt so dirty and ashamed. I didn’t even know what to say to him. We didn’t speak after I found out his secret. He moved out of the apartment since people had found out the truth about him. However, people have spotted him at the woman’s business several times.
He still does everything to try and get my attention. He texts me, comments on my WhatsApp status, and likes my pictures on Instagram. I haven’t blocked him on any of my social media accounts because as much as I hate to admit it, he was a good boyfriend and was one of the first friends I made when I moved into the new apartment.
I felt like if I blocked him, I’d lose a big part of me. Nonetheless, I avoided him like a plague and ignored his comments. After that experience, I decided to put relationships aside before I end up ruining my life and moving back home. I cut off many of the friends I had made in that apartment including Leo since he was probably just as bad as his friend.
It hasn’t been easy but I know things happen for a reason. At least, I now know never to trust a young guy who’s more than willing to give me money and spoil me. Chances are the source of that money isn’t legit and he could have a sugar mummy like my boyfriend.
