The mood in the office reminded her of closing days in boarding school. There was always excitement that filled the air. They were about to break for the Easter holiday. After the kind of two months, they had had, they all needed and wanted that break.
Jane had planned to go visit her family upcountry. Her husband wasn’t going to accompany them as he was on call but she would be travelling with her two children. So, on the following day, they left as early as they could so as to avoid any traffic jams as others rushed to the countryside as well to see their kinsmen.
Evans bid his family farewell and went back to the house. He was also looking forward to the Easter break but for different reasons.
“What time should I expect you?” He said in his text message.
“Good morning to you too. I see someone can’t wait to get a piece of this,” Cate responded with many flirtatious emojis accompanying her text.
This was Evans’ first affair and he liked the thrill of bringing his other woman to his home. He was tired of paying for hotel rooms. Many of the neighbours would not be around so as long as they didn’t engage in PDA outside the house, he felt it was safe for Cats to come. What could possibly go wrong?
He rushed out to get wine for Cats and replenish his beer supply. Jane had left enough food for him and in case they didn’t like the food, they could always order in. Cate arrived at around 1 p.m. She was as excited as Evans was. Like many city girls, she found responsible dads very appealing. Besides Evans’ looks and his willingness to spoil her, his fatherhood status made him even more attractive to her.
Evans on the other hand loved how freaky Cate was. The thrill of the forbidden fruit guided his decision to invite Cate over to his home. They sought to fulfil their desires from the moment Cate walked in the door. They eventually found themselves on Evans’ marital bed. After they were done, Evans went to heat up some of the food that Jane had left. He took Jane some wine as they waited for the food. As he took the glass of wine, it spilt on the bedding as Cat tried to hold the glass.
“Oh shit! That’s such a large wine stain.”
“Baby, don’t worry I’m sure some water will get it out,” Cate responded.
“Let me get a cloth from the bathroom,” Evans said as he rushed to get a wet cloth.
He tried using the cloth but it only made things worse.
Meanwhile, the food was beginning to burn in the kitchen.
He knew he couldn’t explain the stain to Jane so he decided to take the duvet to the laundromat as they went to have a meal elsewhere since the house smelled of burnt food.
He wasn’t sure it would be open since it was a holiday.
“Hi, I had my fingers crossed, wasn’t sure you’d be open,” he told the attending lady.
“Money doesn’t respect holidays,” she said jokingly.
“I agree. Anyway, I have a wine stain that I need you to remove and please I would like to pick it up tomorrow.”
Having agreed on it and made the payment, Evans left. They decided to go to the other side of town for a meal and a few drinks before coming back to his home. On the way to the eatery, Jane called.
“Hey babe, Dad has fallen ill. We’ve managed to get a bit of medical attention but we’re on our way to Nairobi because he needs more specialised care.”
Evans began to panic. His father-in-law was unwell and he also needed to get rid of any evidence of Cate in their home before his family got home. His time with Cate was cut short. He went back to the house immediately to clean up. He even changed the duvet cover since they had soiled the other one.
Jane and the family arrived at the hospital and she sent Evans the details. After several hours in the hospital, they finally went home. It was some minutes to midnight and Jane was so tired.
She could smell the burnt food as soon as she walked through the door. Evans explained he was distracted hence the mess. When she got to the bedroom she could tell something was different but she couldn’t quite place a finger on it yet.
“Babe, what is different?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Evans responded.
She got inside the bed.
“Why does this duvet smell so fresh?” Jane asked.
“Babe, you’re exhausted. That was quite a hectic day, get some rest,” said Evans.
She was too tired to play detective so she slept.
The following day included running up and down the hospital corridors. The dad needed tests done. Evans was there by her side through it all. They got home late in the evening and the next day was similar.
On the fourth day, Jane woke up to go buy items for breakfast since they hadn’t gotten time to shop. The attending at the laundromat was headed to the premises to open up when she saw Jane.
“Mama Liam, I’m happy I bumped into you. Your duvet cover is ready, I’m surprised you guys haven’t come for it after asking me to prioritise it,” she said.
“Duvet cover?” Jane asked looking confused.
“Yes, the one Baba Liam brought in on Good Friday.”
“Oh, let me buy some milk as you open up and then I’ll pass by to pick it up,” Jane said as she bought time to figure this out.
After quickly buying the breakfast supplies, she went to the laundromat.
“The wine stain was a bit difficult to clean but I think I did a good job, You can check it out,” the laundromat lady said with so much pride.
“I trust your work, thank you so much. We’ve been a bit busy. Was it paid for?” Jane asked.
“Yes, Baba Liam paid immediately,”
She left with many questions. Something in her gut told her she was going to hate the answers Evans was about to give her.
“Evans, get up,” she said as she threw the duvet cover on the bed.
Once he saw the duvet, he went pale.
“Why was there a wine stain on it?”
“Wine stain? Where did you get that? I just thought it smelled a bit dusty.”
“So, the lady at the laundromat doesn’t know what she’s talking about? You’re telling me she’s crazy?”
“Babe, she probably made a mistake,” Evans responded.
“Evans, you made me think I was imagining the duvet cover smelled fresh. I even asked what was different and you couldn’t tell me you had changed the bedding?”
By the time they were done, Evans had confessed to his affair. Then in came the begging from him for forgivenes. He was on his knees asking for forgiveness as Jane put his clothes in a suitcase.
“Go stay with your Cate since you wanted her so much that you brought her to our house and bed,” Jane yelled.
The more Evans pleaded with her, the angrier she got. She was now throwing clothes down to his car from their balcony. He left since they were creating an audience. Jane hated alcohol and it infuriated her more that they were drinking in her home and bedroom. The next couple of months were rough as she wondered what to do about Evans. Eventually, she realized she couldn’t get over the betrayal and decided to part ways officially.
