The mid-range phone market is highly competitive with most manufacturers catering to this demand. OPPO has emerged as one of the major players in the industry offering an array of affordable and quality devices. The company has shown its commitment to equipping its phones with top-notch specs while maintaining budget-friendly prices which is evident with their latest phone, the Oppo Reno4, which was recently launched in the Kenyan market.
It’s hard to resist the OPPO Reno4’s appeal even in the highly competitive category. It offers great features like a lighter and slimmer body and top-notch technology including a smart, always-on feature which gives the Oppo Reno 4 a premium feel. We had a chance to have an in-depth look at it and here’s our opinion about the phone.
What’s Inside
Inside the OPPO Reno box, you’ll find a decent number of accessories including a Type C charging cable and head, a sim removal pin, a clear phone case, screen protector, earphones, and of course, the phone. Its gorgeous and sleek design really stands out right from the box.
Design
It features a massive 6.4-inch display coupled with a sleek hole-punch design giving the Oppo Reno4 a premium look and feel. The AMOLED display is vibrant and easy to view from different angles. It also comes with a 90Hz refresh rate which allows images to refresh in one second.
OPPO Reno4’s back might make it feel delicate but, thanks to its light and well-rounded body, it provides a good grip and feels comfortable to hold. It comes in two colours, namely, Galactic Blue and Space Black with an Oppo monogram and Reno Glow technology giving it a matte finish which prevents fingerprint smudges.
Performance
OPPO Reno4 is powered by an 8GB RAM and 128GB SDD with an expandable memory of up to 256 GB and a snappy Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor. As such, the Oppo Reno 4 makes a great gaming phone. It offers ample space for large apps and quick processing so you don’t experience lagging while playing heavy games. Apps also launch and run smoothly on the phone. You can also switch from one app to another without glitches.
The OPPO Reno4 comes with Android 10 upgradeable to Android 11 (when available) and OPPO’s colours. The ColorOS enables users to customize their phones improving the overall aesthetic experience.
Battery Life
With such neck-breaking speeds, battery life would be a point of concern. However, the OPPO Reno4 is equipped with a 4000mAh battery which ensures it can last at least 17 hours with light to moderate usage. We found the fast charging system exceptional. It can get to 50% within 25 minutes thanks to the 65W charger so you won’t have to spend hours waiting for your phone to charge.
Accessibility
The OPPO Reno4 features smart technology such as a floating sidebar that brings frequently used apps and tools. Additionally, the Face Unlock feature works well in low light and also with your face mask which allows users to unlock their phones when they’re out and about without defying pandemic regulations.
Smart air control enables you to control your phone using hand gestures. This includes picking up phone calls or scrolling through apps like TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram.
Camera
OPPO always equips its phones with high-quality cameras as this is a high demand in today’s world. The OPPO Reno4 comes with a triple camera (48MP main camera, 8MP Ultra wide-angle camera, 2MP Macro camera, and a 2MP mono camera) at the back and the front camera has 32MP for better selfies.
Image quality is incredible both in the front and rear cameras. Under good light, the camera captures detail quite well and under low light, there’s a minimal amount of noise. The selfie camera also takes great photos but it doesn’t have a flash. The images are very clear though but as always you can use the AI beautification mode to make your pictures pop more.
There are other modes like Pro expert, Slo-Mo, Pano and Google leans so you can play around with your shots.
For videos, it features a smart video editor, SoLoop, that offers a wide variety of editing tools to help you easily create entertaining videos. The OPPO Reno4 also has impressive 4K recording capabilities which aren’t very common for phones in its price range. It makes taking videos a joy.

We had a few tense moments in the car. This Bull crossed our path and he looked like he wanted to charge. The driver/guide told us that lone male Elephants which have been kicked out of the herd can be very aggressive. #OPPOReno4 @OPPO_Kenya #Amboseli pic.twitter.com/qnukpjrgDM

The only thing that was of concern was how it would sometimes change to black and white while taking pictures and videos on portrait mode so you need to make sure it goes back to the colour if you are shooting for a while. We did love the black and white pictures too.
