Keeping a kitchen garden is becoming more popular in the 21st century. It is both economical and healthy and a good hobby to take up. Nowadays, you can transform your balcony or a little patch of grass in your compound into a flourishing kitchen garden through simple gardening hacks. Once you’re ready to plant, try starting with these plants.

  1. Beans

Beans are exceptionally good kitchen garden plants. Not only do they save you space since they grow vertically, but they are also good yielders. Grow them against their support 4 to 6 inches apart with the hole being 2 inches deep. Beans generally prefer adequate sunlight and well-drained soil. They take about 2 months to mature which is fairly quick. Once they are ready, just pick the pods and replant new seeds. The Health And Nutritional Benefits Of Beans

  1. Garlic

Garlic is not only an essential ingredient in many dishes, but it also contains several health benefits. As an allium, garlic grows quite easily and you get maximum value for your money. One clove gives you a whole bulb. Plant each clove 10 cm apart and 5 cm deep. Additionally, it doesn’t require too much watering as this may cause it to rot. The only downside about garlic is it takes about 9 months to grow. It also requires adequate sunlight so this might not work for a balcony-style kitchen garden. Lifestyle: 10 Health Benefits Of Adding Garlic To Your Food

  1. Cilantro – Dhania/coriander

This plant is sure to add flavour to your meals and your kitchen garden with its beautiful green leaves. And remain fairly low to the ground. This plant also needs full sunlight. Since the plant grows really fast, there’s no need to give it a head start. Within 2 to 3 weeks, the plant grows and starts to flower.  Plant them a ¼ inch deep and about 6 inches apart. Urban Farming: How To Grow Dhania (Coriander) In Your Backyard/Balcony And Harvest every day. 7 Health Benefits Of Coriander (Dhania) That You Might Not Know About

  1. Mint

Why wouldn’t you want mint in your kitchen garden? It adds that fresh fragrance and complements both foods and drinks. This versatile herb grows well and you can keep the plant for up to 2 years. It’s ideal for a balcony kitchen garden and it grows in a pot and doesn’t require as much sunlight. Keep the plant 15 inches apart and thin them regularly. If you want to plant outdoors, submerge the pot 5 inches deep and keep the rim above ground. 9 Health Benefits Of Mint That You May Not Know About

  1. Carrots

The seeds should be planted ¼ inch deep and 2 inches apart. You should also avoid planting them in hot months as they do well in cool temperatures. Carrots grow better in light, well-drained soils. They also become tastier as they grow. Therefore, you should leave them even after until they mature which takes about 2 to 3 months. Benefits Of Carrots For Your Health

Remember to weed out your garden as weeds take out the nutrients from the soil. You may also need to equip yourself with some gardening tools to make your work easier. Ensure to check on your plants, water them regularly and take good care of them for a good harvest. However, don’t be discouraged if your first yield isn’t as fruitful. Gardening requires patience.
