Last year I made a new friend, I made many new friends, but there’s a special one I made who’s super girly girl, and she introduced me to Lush’s strawberry lip scrub. I didn’t even know there was such a thing. #Ushamba. That being said, my lips took to it like a duck to water, however, the same cannot be said about my purse. So here I was with a new lip scrub habit that I had no hope of maintaining. What’s a girl to do? They say the internet is your friend, and they’re right. I found a few simple DIY lip scrub recipes that I’ve been using ever since.
A good scrub will have an exfoliator to slough off that top layer of dried skin and a moisturizer to nourish and moisturize your lips. Removal of the dry skin allows for better penetration of moisturizing and hydrating products. Sugar functions as the exfoliator. Whenever possible use brown sugar as it’s easier on the lips. Honey is used for its antiseptic and healing properties. Coconut oil is a moisturizer and is nourishing to the lips.
It’s most effective to exfoliate your lips before going to bed. Apply on lips and keep on for about five minutes, rinse off with warm water and apply a light coating of lip balm or petroleum jelly. Keep the lip scrub in a sealed glass container in your fridge and it should last for about two to three weeks. Old makeup bottles are perfect for storage. Use three to four times a week for best results. Before each use let the lip scrub sit out and soften in the room temperature for a few minutes then use it.
You’ll need a bowl and spoon for each of the three recipes.
- Brown sugar + Honey + Coconut oil
-2 tablespoons of brown sugar (white sugar will also work)
-1 tablespoon of honey
-1 tablespoon of coconut oil
Mix all the ingredients until they achieve your preferred consistency.
You could also add a drop of vanilla for its fragrant properties.
