David patiently waited for Cheryl in the car. He had done this many times before in their marriage and long before that. It was their sixth Valentine’s Day celebration as a couple. He didn’t care much for the day, but Cheryl did, so it mattered to him. He had made reservations at a new popular restaurant.
Cheryl finally arrived in her red velvet dress and black kitten heels. She looked radiant, but her face told a different story. She tried masking her worry with a smile, but David could tell something was wrong. She denied it when he asked her.
David played soft, romantic music on their way to the restaurant and engaged Cheryl in small talk. Cheryl’s phone rang a couple of times, but she didn’t pick it up. When David asked who was calling her, she claimed it was a ‘wrong’ number. She put the phone on vibration mode only and put it in her bag.
The dinner set-up was lovely, and they loved the restaurant’s ambience. Cheryl took out her phone to take some pictures but could hardly get through a selfie before receiving a call. She asked David for his phone and told him that the camera on his phone was better. She had said that before, so David didn’t find it suspicious.
They enjoyed most of the dinner, but Cheryl still looked uneasy. David’s attempts to get more information from her failed to bear fruit, so he let it go. He figured she would talk to him when she was ready. Cheryl went to the washroom during dessert, leaving her phone in her coat pocket. David heard it vibrating and took it out of the coat. There were close to 20 missed calls.
Cheryl found him looking at the phone.
“What are you doing with my phone?” Cheryl asked him.
“Why do you have so many missed calls? Don’t tell me you don’t know who is calling,” David cut her short as she tried to give the same answer as earlier.
“I don’t know,” Cheryl replied.
“Okay. Let’s use Truecaller to figure it out,” said David.
The first two searches indicated those were spam callers.
“Cheryl, what is going on?” David asked her.
“Okay, I owe some people, and they’re calling to collect,” said Cheryl.
“What kind of people do you owe, and how much is this debt?” David asked her.
Cheryl murmured under her breath. Before she could answer, David asked her, “I provide everything and give you a monthly allowance, so why are you in debt?”
Colour flashed from Cheryl’s face. She stared at David in panic, with tears balancing in her eyes.
“I…I…,” she stammered.
A waiter interrupted their discussion when he brought the bill. Their conversation had also attracted a bit of attention. David suddenly realized people were looking at them, so he hurriedly paid, signalled Cheryl to get up, and they headed to the car.
“Why do you owe these people, and how much is it?” David asked her.
“I was trying to help out a friend,” said Cheryl.
“Which friend? Why didn’t you ask me for the money?” David asked her.
Cheryl couldn’t come up with answers, so David angrily took her phone. He went through her messages as she tried grabbing the phone. He was further agitated by the numerous messages streaming in as he tried to get to the bottom of the story.
“Who is Wyatt?” David asked Cheryl.
“He was my friend,” said Cheryl.
“Why are you sending him nudes, and why is he asking for money?” David asked her.
“I didn’t cheat on you. I swear,” cried Cheryl.
Amidst the fight, Cheryl explained to David that she had started talking to ‘Wyatt’ on Instagram when he sent her a message and complimented her pictures and videos. He used a white man’s image and told her that he was European. They started talking regularly, and within no time, they exchanged numbers and flirted.
After four months of chatting and flirting, Wyatt claimed he was travelling to Kenya to see her. He told Cheryl that he was in love with her. Cheryl also thought that she had fallen for him and was considering leaving David for him if he came for her.
Upon arrival in Kenya, or at least that’s what Wyatt told Cheryl, his friend ran into trouble. This was the friend who was hosting him while in the country. The friend was wrongfully caught up in some drug charges, and they needed to bribe the cops to have him released. Wyatt was having trouble accessing his accounts back in Europe, so he needed Cheryl to send him the money, and he would refund her later.
Cheryl emptied what she had in her savings account and topped up the remainder using several loan apps, and she also borrowed from her friends. Soon after she sent the money to the number Wyatt had indicated, she couldn’t reach him. David had just sent her that month’s allowance, which was part of what she had sent Wyatt, so she couldn’t ask for money to pay back the loans.
She tried calling and texting Wyatt using the number they had been using, but she couldn’t reach him. She went back to their Instagram chats, but he’d deleted his profile. That was when she knew she had been scammed and was heartbroken.
David was trembling in anger as she told him the story. He couldn’t tell what disgusted him more; her entertaining another man or that she was scammed while at it.
“Get out of the car,” David told her.
“How will I get home?” Cheryl asked him.
“You were resourceful enough to solve Wyatt’s problems, or whatever his real name is. Figure it out,” David responded and sped away.
He went home the following day and found Cheryl in the house. She had sent the children to their grandparents’ house.
“I’m so sorry, babe,” Cheryl cried.
“Why did you do it?” David asked.
“I don’t know what got into me,” Cheryl responded.
“You better not blame the devil!” David told her.
“Please forgive me. I’ll never do it again,” Cheryl pleaded.
“What haven’t I given you, Cheryl? What were you looking for?” David asked.
After much discussion, they separated, and David stayed with the kids but allowed her to visit them.
