From August 1, the SGR train schedule will change. The public notice was given by the Kenya Railways and they set it to start a few days from today.

According to the notice by Kenya Railways, they are revising the train schedule for the Mombasa to Nairobi Madaraka express passenger service. The revision is aimed at improving the performance, efficiency and overall user satisfaction on the service.

These are the changes

Train            Departure (New)           Arrival (New)
Inter-County Train

(From Nairobi- Mombasa)

0820 hrs

            1418 hrs
Nairobi To Mombasa

(Express Train)

               1435 hrs              1918 hrs
Inter-county Train

(Mombasa to Nairobi)

               0800 hrs               1342hrs
Mombasa to Nairobi

(Express Train)

               1515 hrs               2014 hrs

The changes in schedule will not affect the prevailing fare prices as they were recently revised. The prices for Nairobi to Mombasa remain at Ksh. 1000 for the economy class and Ksh. 3000 for the first class tickets. Through dialling *639#, you can easily book your train ticket or maybe just find out the price for your ticket which is cheaper than having to travel to the railway station. Booking your ticket at least a day in advance will also save you the trouble and heartache of postponing your trip because you will miss one. However, if you have to book physically especially for those in need of group tickets, you can visit either terminus every day as from 6:30 AM To 4:00 PM.

The convenience brought forth by the Standard Gauge Railway has been unmatched including evading the tiresome buses and matatus. The new train departure time (8:20 AM) from Nairobi means you don’t have to worry about missing the train because of Mombasa Road traffic! But please make it a point to get at your respective terminuses an hour or so earlier because the security checks are time-consuming and besides you can rest by their waiting lounge before the train doors are open.

Relevant information

  • Luggage weight limit is 30 kgs per person
  • If your travel plans change you can get an 80% refund if you contact SGR ticketing office before the train leaves.
  • There are no refunds if the train has already left your station.

Hopefully, with these new changes, the SGR train will achieve its goals and the passengers will get to enjoy an effective, more satisfying and better performance as promised.
