The Singlehood Series: My Married Best Friend Uses Me As An Excuse To Cheat On His Wife

Despite his love for women, Kevin was the last person I thought would cheat on his wife.

At times, I look at my married friends and feel lucky to be single. It sounds like I’m hating on married people but the way some of them behave will make you question if you really want to be married. The headache of constantly worrying whether your spouse is cheating on you is not worth it at all.

My best friend was one of the first people in our friend group to get married. He had been dating Diana since our university days and we all knew they would end up tying the knot. However, Kevin has one not-so-small problem. He loves women. He always has and he still does to this day.

Throughout the years before their marriage, he has managed to resist the temptation of cheating on his girlfriend. He has come close many times but he never did. However, their relationship was going through some tough times.

“My wife isn’t sleeping with me. Sometimes, we don’t even sleep in the same bed.” He complained.

“It happens. Just communicate with her and give her some time.” I advised him.

“How am I supposed to survive without sex?” He asked, slightly embarrassed.

“Come on. That’s not more important than your marriage.”

“That’s what makes marriage more tolerable, though.”

“Just give it time.”

It turned out Diana was being moody because she was pregnant. Kevin couldn’t contain his excitement about the news. The couple had waited for years for that moment and there was nothing that could steal their joy.

However, the reality of pregnancy hit Kevin after a few months. We would meet regularly for drinks and he would complain about the lack of intimacy in their marriage.

“At first, we used to have sex every now and then, but now, she doesn’t want anything to do with me completely.”

“Have you talked to her about it?”

“Of course I have but nothing has changed.”

“I don’t know how to help you, man. I’ve not been in your position.”

“I’m at a point where I’m willing to risk my marriage because I need some intimacy.” He said in frustration.

I was surprised. Though Kevin liked women, I thought he couldn’t cheat on Diana because he loved her too much. I was wrong.

The next time we went out, Kevin showed up with a girl. I didn’t ask him who it was since I already knew. My other friends cheat on their wives and girlfriends all the time so it wasn’t really new to me.

“Hi, I’m Mandy.” She said as she reached for a handshake.

“Hi,” I said and looked away as Kevin placed his hand on her.

As the night went on, the two couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Kevin didn’t seem to care that he was a married man or that I was good friends with his wife.

When the night was over, the two of them disappeared and I didn’t hear anything until Diana called me in a panic.

“Is Kevin with you?” She asked.

“Aah.. yes. He got too drunk and didn’t want to disturb you. He’s taking a shower. He’ll be home soon.”

“Okay. Thanks. You’re such a good friend, Vic.”

“No problem,” I answered, then hung up and called Kevin immediately.

“Where are you?”

“I’m in Westlands.”

“Your wife is looking for you. You better go home now and tell her you were at my place.”

It became a routine to cover for Kevin while he was with his side chick after he realized that I would cover for him. I tried to warn him but he knew I couldn’t betray him since he was my best friend.

There were a couple of times that Diana almost found out that I was lying to her but I was able to convince her.

“He said that you were going on a boys’ trip out of town so how are you at your place?” She asked in a fury.

“The trip was cancelled because one of the guys had an emergency,” I explained.

Kevin was also getting reckless. He invited his side chick knowing very well the other guys would bring their wives and girlfriends who were close friends with Diana. Things went exactly how I thought they would.

The ladies told Diana about the girl that was with Kevin and she immediately called me.

“What is this about?” She asked. “I thought you were my friend.”

“It’s not what you think.”

“Vic, you better not lie to me because I’ve always suspected Kevin was cheating on me.”

“What? He would never cheat on you. I know the girl. She’s just an old friend of ours. Actually, Kevin asked her to come so he could set me up with her, but you know me, I’m committed to the single life.”

“Why did the ladies say that they were dancing suggestively and were touching each other?”

“I didn’t see any of that but as I said, Kevin can’t cheat on you. I can’t even let him.”

“Okay. And where is he right now?”

“He has a meeting with a client.”

“I don’t like that I have to ask you where my husband is.”

“He’ll be back soon. Try talking to him and not in a confrontational way.”

“Okay, I will. Thanks.”

Despite coming so close to being caught, Kevin didn’t change his ways. I even tried to talk to the side chick to leave him alone but she didn’t care.

“Don’t you feel bad that Kevin is cheating on his pregnant wife with you?”

“That’s not my problem. I love Kevin and he loves me too.”

“He doesn’t love you and he’ll never leave his wife for you. You’re just a distraction.”

“We’ll see about that.”

Sure enough, he dumped his side chick but got another one. I thought that the cheating would stop after Diana gave birth but it’s still going on and I’m still his scapegoat. I’m even considering getting into a relationship so he wouldn’t use me as an excuse to cheat on his wife.
