I have gone through a lot of things as an adult. However, I never imagined that I would ever have to deal with betrayal, especially from the two people I loved the most. Interestingly enough, I did notice some red flags before I finally confirmed that Derrick was cheating on me with her. They would always hug each other a little longer a little longer than normal, then Derrick loved to spin her. Whenever we visited, he would give her foot rubs and on Valentine’s Day, two days before I found out the truth, he brought us both flowers.

I’m fond of thinking deeply about situations but when it came to my mother and Derrick, I let things slide. In my mind, there was no way that they would betray me. On a random day when I was home alone, my grandmother decided to visit. It seemed abrupt but I loved spending time with her, so I didn’t mind. I thought it was a casual visit until she expressed that she had noticed some odd behaviour between my husband and my mother.

Most of what she said was in line with what I had witnessed and in as much as I was crushed a part of me was relieved. The fact that someone else noticed meant that I was not overthinking.

“Do you think I should confront them?” I asked her.

“The truth always comes to light, so I think it’s best to sit and wait,” She replied.

I knew she was right, but I didn’t feel like I would be able to wait for things to unfold. Luckily, that very night everything was revealed. Derrick was very fond of his work and sometimes his fondness would push him to work extra hours. The one thing I liked about him was that he would always inform me whenever he was working late. That night he told me that he would be home by 9 pm. When it clocked 10 pm and he hadn’t called I decided to video call him and he answered.

“Hey babe, are you almost home? I wanted to know if you would like me to warm your food or just head to bed,” I said.

“Time sure flies. I didn’t realize how late it is, I’ll be home soon,” He replied.

“How long do you think it’ll take you to get home?” I asked him.

Before he had the chance to respond I heard a phone ring and someone picked up the call and was talking in the background. Judging from the sound of the voice it was a woman. Derrick turned to the passenger seat and glared at whoever was seated beside him.

“Who are you in the car?” I asked.

He didn’t respond, instead, he quickly hung up the phone and my heart started racing. The first thought that crossed my mind was that I was right. However, I was trying to debate whether it was with my mum or a random woman. A few minutes later I called him back.

“Why are you lying to me? What is going on?” I asked the moment he picked up.

“There’s nobody in the car, I have never given you a reason not to trust me, Catherine,” He replied defensively.

“Show me the passenger seat Derrick,” I said.

“No,” He replied before hanging up again.

I ended up having a panic attack for some time then decided to video call him again.

“If I’m overreacting then why won’t you just show me the passenger seat?” I asked.

“Fine!” He snapped and showed me the seat.

“So, you expect me to believe that the woman you were with didn’t just leave when you hung up on me?” I asked.

“You’re overreacting, I’ll be home soon then we will talk,” He said and hung up again.

By this time, I had a feeling that it was my mum. However, I wanted to be completely sure before pointing any fingers. So, I decided to call my small sister since she still lived at home. My main aim was to confirm if my mum was home or not.

“Okay, I don’t want to keep this from you, but Derrick passed by and left with Mum. They told me not to tell you and they didn’t tell me where they were going,” She said.

“I see,” I replied.

“What’s going on?’ She asked.

“Nothing, thank you for telling me. Go back to sleep I’ll call you tomorrow,” I replied.

Immediately I hung up and I decided to call my mum. She didn’t pick up the first 3 times so I kept calling until she did.

“What do you want at this hour?” She asked.

“You couldn’t find someone else?” I said.

“What are you talking about Catherine?” She asked.

“You know what, “I said.

In the background, I could hear my husband telling her, “Put her on speaker.”

“You want me to tell you why I’m with Derrick? I was having a bad day and he decided to take me to get some fresh air. There’s nothing wrong with that,” She replied.

“Derrick, before you take my mother home make sure you pass by our place so we can all talk,” I said and hung up.

Eventually, they got to the house and attempted to hug me.

“Don’t even try to touch me!” I snapped in a low tone trying to avoid waking up the kids.

“So, are you two having an affair?” I continued.

“No,” Derrick replied while looking directly at me.

“I would never do that to you, Catherine,” My mother replied.

“Get out of my house,” I said bluntly while looking at her and went straight to bed.

The night turned out to be longer than I thought because as much as I tried to sleep, I couldn’t. The following day my mother showed up early in the morning. I thought that she had come over to try and convince me to believe their lies. The moment she settled down, Derrick walked into the living room. I stood up to leave but he stopped me and asked me to give them time to explain. They confessed everything and because I had spent the previous day panicking and crying, I didn’t say anything.

They attempted to apologise but after finding out that my husband and mother betrayed me there’s no going back. I stood up, walked towards the door and signalled my mother to leave. She left silently and that marked the end of our bond. As for Derrick, it took time, but we ended up getting divorced. A man I loved so much went from being my husband to someone I see occasionally when he comes to visit the kids. They say blood is thicker than water but, in my view, neither is greater.
