You’ve spent an awfully long part of your life hoping – Hoping that once you finish high school, you’ll get into a relationship and be able to do whatever you want. Hoping that once you graduate from the university, you’ll get a good job. Hoping that once you get a good job, you’ll afford the finer things in life. But here you are, unable to do what you want, without a good job, and no relationship, and you still can’t afford the finer things in life.

You should have met your dream man by now. But every man who breathes in your direction has a problem. His breath smells, or he’s misogynistic, uneducated, or poor. None of them are helping you to get to your ideal life. So, you drop them as soon as they arrive.

All you want is a rich, tall, dark man, in that priority. Yet, all you’ve attracted is the opposite – poor, short, and light-skinned. You would rather wait for your Prince Charming.

Your life is full of sh*t, and you’re determined to make a change. The first step is acceptance, right?

Yes, you have a good job, but it doesn’t even nearly cater to the lifestyle you would want. By the 15th of each month, you’re struggling to make ends meet. You’re eating noodles every day because it’s the only thing you can afford, and you realise that you are only just surviving life, not living it.

Your friend, Natasha, is living the life of your dreams. You can’t help but get jealous. Seeing her pictures as you scroll through Instagram makes you feel terrible. She has everything that you’ve ever wanted, and yet you believe that you’re prettier, smarter, and more deserving than her. But you know her secret, you just don’t know if you’re willing to go in that direction.

You were raised in a strict Catholic home, where the values of chastity and purity were preached almost daily. You spent your whole life holding on to your virginity, and there was nothing that could convince you otherwise. Not until you met Natasha.

Natasha slowed down her V8 next to you at the stage. She had seen you and decided to stop to say hi and give you a lift.

“I promise it’s not out of my way, plus, we have a lot to catch up on,” she said.

Her voice has changed, she sounds American. Her wig looks like it costs more than anything you’ve ever owned. To add to that, her makeup is perfectly in place yet it’s the end of the day. She smells like money.

You tried as much as you could to ignore the feeling, but you couldn’t. How was her lifestyle so different from yours? Her car oozed sophistication. She had the latest iPhone, an Apple Watch, AirPods, and an Apple pen. You’re sure that if they existed, her car would be an Apple car.

She asks you for your number, and you as soon as you start to type it out, her phone rings. It awakens another accent.

“Yes, darling. I’ll be at the mall in fifteen minutes. What’s the credit card limit again?”

He answers her.

“Anything I want? Okay, thanks darling,” she says, as though she’s used to it.

He sounds old. If you were to guess, he’s probably around 50 years old or so.

You put your number on her phone and hop off to walk to your destination.

It’s been a week, but you can’t seem to get Natasha out of your head. Where does she meet these old men? You want her lifestyle and more. It sounds like a dream.

You finally pick up the phone to call her. You don’t know how you’ll start the conversation but you know that you’ll gather all the courage in you and just do it.

“Where did you meet him? I want one,” you say, and she laughs.

“You sound like you’re talking about an object,” she answers.

Slowly, she opens up to you. She invites you to a fancy hotel on Saturday, but there’s a disclaimer. You have to look sexy. You need full-on makeup, the shortest dress in your wardrobe, and the highest heels you can find.

So, you take your last 5,000 bob and go shopping. You tick all the boxes on your shopping list – the shortest dress, the highest heels, and a set of new makeup products.

You’re not sure how you’ll make it to the end of the month, now that you’ve blown all your budget for food. But if there’s one thing your parents taught you, it’s to follow your dreams wholeheartedly.

Saturday comes, and you wake up earlier than usual. You spend 5 hours doing your makeup, following tutorials on Youtube.

You arrive at the hotel in a bodaboda, a rare sight, but that’s the best you could afford. As you walk in the watchmen look at you and smile, almost as though they’ve seen this script before.

You walk up to the restaurant by the pool. Natasha is already there waiting for you.

“This is how it goes. You order yourself a drink, sit by yourself, and act like you belong here. They’ll start coming for you. They know the game. Everyone around here knows the game.”

You do exactly as she says. You walk to your table, and try to copy everything that Natasha does. You sit the way she’s sat and sip on your wine as she does.

Then slowly, the men start to trickle in, and as sure as the night, one of them walks up to you.

“Hey darling,” he says.

You look up and act surprised, as though you hadn’t seen him coming.

“Do you mind if I join you?” He asks, and you quickly agree. You say a silent prayer that even if things don’t work out, he’ll at least pay for your drink.

He asks for your number and you give it to him. He drops a bundle of notes on the table, stands up, winks at you and walks away. He’s old, but he’s still sexy, and you can tell that he’s RICH.

You make eye contact with Natasha and smile at one another. Then, she signals you to start the process again.

You continue sipping on your wine, and another man approaches you. This time, he actually catches you off-guard.

“Hey there, darling,” he says.

You lower your sunglasses in a sophisticated way so that you can see him. But when you do, you wish that you’d kept them on.

“Uncle Wachira!” you say, shocked.

Your heart is beating fast and you’re not sure what to say next. You need time to catch your breath. Then, he saves the situation.

“Yes, it’s me Wanjiru. How are you today?” He asks.

He has changed the script to look as though he knew it was you all along. You catch the drift pretty first, and you act like you’re waiting on a friend.

Later, you go home, sweating. That was too close, and what was Uncle Wachira doing there anyway? Does Aunty Naipa know that he’s out there lusting after young girls?

You have so many questions. You’re now judging him terribly, and you’ll never see him the same way. Look at the pot calling the kettle black!

Anyway, you have one successful contact, and that’s all that matters. Soon enough, you’ll be able to do what you want, with a ‘good job’, and able to afford the finer things in life.
