Isaac and I have been friends for a long time. He was one of the first people I met after finishing university, and we have remained friends throughout the years. We have gone for long periods of time without talking to each other. However, we always pick things up from where we left off and carry on as if nothing happened. We have seen each other in our highest and lowest moments, which has only made our friendship stronger. We have even tried to date, but it didn’t work out. The last time Isaac and I spoke, he was doing well in life. He had a bit of money, and things were looking good for him.
He tried to hit on me again. We went out on a date, then went to a club for drinks before returning to his place. That time, we were intimate, and we both seemed to enjoy it. I got up the following morning, made him breakfast, and spent a few hours at his place before going back to mine.
“Thanks for coming,” he said while handing me some money. “Call me when you get home.”
I was surprised when he gave me the money, but I couldn’t refuse. When I got home, I called him and we talked for a while. He seemed happy and wanted to see me again soon.
Even though things went well, I still wasn’t keen on dating Isaac. I didn’t want a relationship to ruin our friendship, so I avoided seeing him too often. We would meet once a month, and I made it clear that we were simply friends.
“I’m not really looking for a relationship right now,” I told him.
He seemed okay with being just friends. Isaac was more focused on his career than a relationship, so our arrangement was working at the moment.
After a few months, things started to get complicated. I started falling for Isaac. He would talk about other women, and I would go into a jealous rage. However, I didn’t tell him about my feelings since I was the one who wanted to keep things casual.
We still had fun. He would take me out, buy me gifts and give me some money, but I wanted more. I wanted to be his girlfriend. I tried throwing some subtle hints, but he either didn’t notice or he ignored them.
After trying everything I could think of, I decided to ask one of our mutual friends, Lydia, for her help. She always wanted us to end up together, and since I was ready to be in a relationship with Isaac, she was more than ready to help me.
“What do I do to get his attention?” I asked desperately.
“Don’t stress yourself. It will happen when the time is right,” she said.
“I can’t wait any longer. I think he’s interested in another woman.”
“What if we go on a double date?”
“Isaac doesn’t like dates.”
“We can do whatever he likes, even clubbing, as long as my boyfriend and I are there.”
It seemed like a good idea, and at that point, I had nothing to lose. I hoped that if he saw our friends in a happy relationship, he might want us to date.
Isaac was more than happy to go on a double date with Lydia and her boyfriend. He picked the location and offered to pay for everything.
“Tell them to just show up. I’ll take care of everything,” he said.
Sometimes, it made me uncomfortable how Isaac spent money. It was exciting at first, but as time went by, it felt like that was the only way he knew how to make connections. However, I couldn’t tell him anything since it wasn’t my money.
We met the following weekend at an upscale hotel. Isaac had booked a reservation, and we all showed up, dressed to the nines. It was a fun evening. It felt more like friends hanging out than a double date. We couldn’t stop laughing and teasing each other.
“So, Isaac, you’re turning 38 this year, right?” Lydia said.
“Yes.”
“When are you planning on getting married?”
“I don’t know. I still haven’t found my person yet.”
“Marion is right here.”
He looked at me, then laughed. “She’s my best friend. Besides, she only likes me for my money.”
Everyone went silent. Marion looked at m,e then tapped me as if to snap me back to reality.
“What do you mean?” I asked Isaac.
“You only like me for my money. What’s so hard to understand about that?”
“Why do you say that?”
“When I didn’t have money, you wanted nothing to do with me. Now, you want to be my girlfriend because I buy you things and give you money.”
“That’s not why I want to be your girlfriend.”
“Why do you want to be my girlfriend?”
I was quiet once again. I didn’t think that it was the right place to have such a conversation because Isaac would dismiss everything I said. Additionally, I didn’t think it was relevant anymore. He clearly thought that I was after his money, and I wasn’t interested in being with someone who thought so low of me.
We went on with the dinner, but things were awkward. Lydia and her boyfriend tried to change the subject, but I just ate my food in silence while they conversed.
By the end of the night, I took an Uber home and cried all the way there. I had never felt so humiliated in my life. It felt worse since it was coming from someone whom I had been friends with for years. It was like he didn’t know me.
Lydia called me later that evening to check on me.
“He was just drunk. Give it another chance.”
“No, Lydia. That’s exactly how he feels about me.” I said, fighting back tears.
Isaac never apologised for what he said. He kept flirting with me as if nothing had happened. However, I realized that our situationship was going nowhere, and the longer I entertained him, the harder it would be to find a serious partner.
I stopped replying to his texts, and eventually, he stopped inviting me for night outs. I haven’t found someone serious yet, but at least, I’m not in a toxic situationship.
