Laura had just argued with Bill for the umpteenth time when a message from a familiar number popped up on her phone. At this point, she didn’t even know why they were arguing. Everything about Bill got her in a bad mood. His snoring, his constant complaints about weight, yet he did nothing about it and his choice of a vegan diet. Did he expect her to prepare food at different times every time? That was even a better idea than him expecting her to join him in self-imposed pleasure deprivation. She wasn’t going to give up her meat for him.
The thing that annoyed Laura most was Bill’s lack of ambition, or so she claimed. He had a good job, which he could have used to fund other lucrative ventures, but Bill seemed content. Finding him lying on the couch annoyed her so much. In addition to that, he enjoyed being indoors while Laura was adventurous.
On the other hand, Bill couldn’t understand what Laura was on about, given that he made more than she did. He was glad to accompany her in her activities, but he expected her to choose the activities. He was okay with Laura not making his vegan dishes. However, Laura had learned that since Bill’s primary love language was acts of service, he would eventually complain that she wasn’t showing him love if she let him cook those meals too many times.
After months of constant fights over the same things, that house felt like Bosnia in the 90s. Laura felt excited when she saw the message. She had deleted the number, but she knew it by heart. Kush had texted her. In Laura’s mind, Kush was the one who got away.
She met Kush last year on campus. He was hilarious, well-built and adventurous. Kush was also the one who introduced her to the world of orgasms. She’d read about it in Mills & Boon long before she tried it, but her previous experiences in bed had led her to believe that climaxing was mythical. That was until Kush happened.
Kush was exciting, spontaneous and hella smart. Everything about him awoke Laura with desire. She believed they were on the same wavelength. There was only one problem—Kush wasn’t ready to commit to a monogamous relationship. They tried exclusive dating, and it ended up in ugly fights. They tried an open relationship, but Laura hated it because she couldn’t be with anyone else. They also tried plutonic friendship, which always ended in either person’s bed.
Laura landed in Bill’s arms after one of her breakups with Kush. Bill was everything Kush wasn’t. He was safe. He wanted her only. If it had been up to him, he would have proposed to her three months into their relationship. Laura said she wasn’t ready for marriage yet.
When Kush texted, he hadn’t expected a response from Laura. Their last conversation gave him the impression that she was happy with Bill. He knew when Laura committed to someone, she only had eyes for them. However, he wanted to talk to Laura. He had received life-changing news, and he needed to talk to her.
“I didn’t think you’d respond, let alone agree to meet up,” said Kush to Laura.
“You found me on one of those days,” said Laura.
“I don’t know what one of those days means, but I’m glad to see you,” said Kush. He looked at her as though he could see through her soul.
Within minutes, Laura opened up about her situation. Kush was surprised.
“I really thought you were happy with Bill. I was secretly envious of him,” said Kush.
“So, why did you want to see me?” Laura asked him.
“My grandmother recently passed away and left me a huge fortune. I’m afraid I’ll choose the wrong woman,” said Kush.
“I’m so sorry to hear that. I know how much she meant to you,” said Laura.
“She was sick for a while, so we had a lot of time to talk about life,” said Kush.
It sounded as though Kush was finally ready to settle down. Laura tried her best to push away the idea of reconciling with Kush, but the coffee dates turned into dinners, picnics, and road trips, and eventually, their affair was no longer a secret. She broke up with Bill.
Laura’s best friend was against the idea of dating Kush, but Laura was convinced this was their chance to get it right. For a few months, everything was great, but Laura soon learned that a tiger doesn’t change its stripes. She had traded arguing about staying indoors for fighting over condom wrappers, hotel receipts and heated exchanges with other women over Kush.
