Kinky sex is adventurous. It can also be a way of exploring intimacy with a sex partner. Kink requires an element of trust that can make sexual partners develop stronger bonds. Many people who practice kink can also attest to how much more intense orgasms can be when such activities are added. However, kinky sex can be extremely dangerous–especially when it involves physical activities like erotic asphyxiation.

Types of kinky sex that can be dangerous

1. Choking

In research published by The Conversation, the findings show that many young people engage in choking during sex. Erotic asphyxiation includes cutting off air during sex to increase the intensity of an orgasm. Pressure against the neck cuts off air, which can feel fun in the moment. However, it also increases the risk of injuries that range from the mild, like bruising and vomiting, to extreme situations like death.

Death by erotic asphyxiation is rare, but it makes sexual strangulation dangerous. The risks are also higher because partners believe it’s safe due to communication and keeping the pressure light. Stopping blood flow to the brain is very easy. It’s better to avoid choking during sex and instead use a choker, tie, or ribbon to enjoy the sensation of something around your neck. It’s also important to remember not to practice kink when one or both sexual partners are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An altered state can make it difficult to control how you treat your partner.

2. Spanking

Spanking is a light way of experiencing pain during sex. The taps against the skin can make sex feel more intense and increase the level of intimacy between partners. Spanking can be done with the hands, belts, whips, riding crops, paddles, and other objects with a flat surface. While spanking can be fun for people who enjoy it, overdoing it can lead to bruising or even internal injury. According to McMaster University, a 61-year-old man experienced kidney failure after excessive spanking. He didn’t have any pre-existing renal failure conditions.

When practising spanking, it’s important to ensure it’s not done excessively. Check in with your partner constantly and monitor their skin for any colour changes. Stop immediately when the skin darkens from bruising. The idea is to enjoy some pain, not to make it difficult for your partner to sit or walk for the next few days.

3. Marking

During kinky sex, you may feel the desire to mark your partner. This includes deliberate bruising from grabbing someone hard enough to leave marks, hickeys, or scarring. Marking can be dangerous when it involves breaking skin. Marking can show less injury when it’s done on areas with looser skin like the butt, breasts or hips. However, it’s not always deliberate. If your partner is using too much force, they can injure more delicate areas like the vagina. Rough sex shouldn’t make your partner risk severe injury. Ensure you’re constantly communicating with your partner to know their limits.

It’s also important to limit how much force you put into thrusts. In addition, hickeys aren’t always safe. A hickey is applied by kissing a spot on the skin and applying a sucking pressure. In 2011, a New Zealand woman had a stroke after her partner left a love bite on the neck above a major artery. The hickey caused a blood clot to form, which led to a stroke. When applying a hickey, you should avoid any areas above major blood vessels.

4. Bondage

According to Medical News Today, the hematoma is a common injury from bondage sex. This is when clotted blood pools under the skin, in an organ, or tissue. Restraining your partner can make sex a lot of fun. However, it’s important to ensure it’s done safely. The bonds shouldn’t be tight enough to cut off circulation or prevent escape. The bondage materials should also be skin-safe, such as silk, satin, or hemp. There should also be a pair of scissors to cut the bonds immediately when it is needed.

Exciting Ways To Use Sex Toys With A Partner

How to practice safe kinky sex

The most important part of sex is communication and consent. It’s important to ensure that your partner is always comfortable. Checking in to see if they’re still enjoying themselves reduces the risk of injury.

It’s also important to avoid practising kink when you’ve been drinking or taking other substances that alter states. This ensures both you and your partner are in full control of your faculties when engaging in kinky sex.

Having no experience in kink can also increase the risk of injury. Don’t use sources full of misleading content like pornography. Many couples do say they get their kink ideas from adult entertainment videos. However, porn is performed on a set. It’s fake performances and doesn’t show the reality of various kinks. When practising kink for the first time, try to use verifiable sources like health sites or members of a kink community to remain safe.

Remember that practising kink isn’t shameful. If you do experience any serious injuries from sex, seek medical attention immediately and be honest with your healthcare provider as to what caused it. Being honest with them makes it easier to give you the necessary treatment, and your doctor can also give you better counselling on how to practise safe kinky sex.
