Serah had taken a day off to run some errands. She was about to leave the house when the gateman called her. “Madam Serah, there’s a delivery to your house. Should I let him in?” Serah was a little confused. She vaguely remembered reading a message about her package arriving but was too sleepy. “I’m on my way out; let me come,” Serah told the gateman.

The package was huge. It looked like it could be a wall painting. It read, “To Serah and Kelcy Wafunya.” That was when it dawned on Serah that it was a wedding gift that got to them late. There was an issue with the shipping. Their friend who lived abroad had sent it as her wedding gift. In a split second, she corrected herself, “Kelcy’s friend.” Were ex-husband-to-be’s friends still her friends? The gift disoriented her. However, she couldn’t change her plans, so she put the gift in her car and proceeded with her day’s activities.

Part of the agenda for the day was to meet her best friend. They had a monthly check-in lunch. She told Joy, her best friend, about the gift. Joy already suspected something was wrong based on Serah’s bad mood. She was snapping at everyone, which was unlike Serah.

“Okay, spit it out. What’s wrong?” Joy asked Serah.

“That obvious, huh?” Serah asked.

“Yep. If you keep giving the waiter that look, who knows what they’ll put in our food,” Joy joked.

“I got a late wedding gift delivered to the house today,” Serah told Joy.

“Oh babe, I’m sorry. How are you feeling?” Joy asked.

“Sad is the overall feeling. I’ve got to send it to Kelcy, though. It’s from one of his friends,” Serah told Joy.

“Are you sure you’re ready to talk to him?” Joy asked her.

“Yes. I want him to have it. He’d appreciate it more,” Serah responded.

They spent the rest of the afternoon doing things that made Serah happy. Calling off the wedding with Kelcy was the most painful thing she had ever had to experience. Later in the evening, she decided to text Kelcy. Texting was easier than calling him.

“Hi. I received a late wedding gift from your friend. I’d like you to have it. Let me know when I can send a courier over to you,” Serah wrote to Kelcy. He immediately called her.

“Hi,” said Kelcy.

“Hi,” Serah responded. There was a moment of silence.

“I’m glad to hear from you,” said Kelcy.

“Well, your friend sent a cool pushpin world map. I guess she couldn’t change the delivery address or something. Anyway, you should have it. You love travelling and artsy stuff more than I do,” Serah told Kelcy.

“Always thoughtful,” Kelcy murmured.

“I think it’s only right,” Serah responded.

“Thank you. I miss you, babe; I mean Serah. I miss us,” Kelcy said, sounding a little more desperate than he had intended it to sound. It caught Serah off guard, and she suddenly had a lump in her throat. She was fighting back her tears.

“I miss… I can’t go through this again, Kelcy. Kindly send me the details so that I can send it,” said Serah, and she ended the call.

She held the phone close to her chest for a while. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she felt a myriad of emotions. Then she looked at the gift and noticed the card for the first time. It was addressed to both of them. “Kelcy and Serah, to finding someone who is a home and an adventure all at once.” That intensified the waterworks. Soon, she found herself scrolling through her images of them as a couple.

Kelcy had been almost like a dream come true. That was until they started planning the wedding. Their relationship was easy. Although different, they hadn’t struggled to get invested in each other’s interests. Kelcy loved travelling, art, and technology, while Serah loved her numbers, experiences and books. Food was the one thing they had in common, but once they started dating, they got each other interested in picking up more hobbies. Kelcy was a social butterfly, while Serah preferred a smaller crowd.

They were committed to their relationship from the get-go, so they found a way to balance their differences. The wedding planning, however, proved to be too much of a challenge for them. Kelcy’s family was wealthier and had a social status to maintain. Kelcy had underestimated what that entailed. His family’s demands tripled their budget, affected their wedding ideas, and created a rift between him and Serah. On the other hand, Serah’s family got tired of hearing about Kelcy’s family imposition.

The only traditional event that was drama-free was the initial one. After that, the rift between the families widened as the plans intensified. Serah tried compromising, but Kelcy’s family didn’t appreciate it and wanted things done their way. Eventually, Serah got tired of fighting and decided to cancel the wedding. That decision did not go well with either family. Kelcy was sad, but the fighting had also exhausted him.

After crying for a while and reminiscing, Serah texted Kelcy. “I miss you too.” That was the cue Kelcy had been waiting for. He wasted no time and apologized to Serah for not standing up for them. He also mentioned that he had had time to reflect on everything that had gone wrong.

“I know you did your best to accommodate my overbearing family, Serah. I love how thoughtful you are. You didn’t have to tell me about the gift, but you did despite everything we put you through. I know what I lost and would like a chance to win you back,” said Kelcy.

In no time, they were back together. A few weeks later, Serah called Joy. “I would like you to accompany me to the Attorney General’s office as one of our witnesses.”

“Oh my God! I’m not surprised you got back together with Kelcy, but I didn’t see this part coming,” Joy admitted.

“So, is that a yes?” Serah asked Joy.

“Of course, love. I have always rooted for you two. But are you sure about this? What about his family?” Joy asked Serah.

“He’s doing a better job of handling them, but I have accepted that’s a challenge I will have to deal with from time to time,” Serah told Joy.

“Okay. They could also ease up,” Joy told Serah.

“I hope they, but for now, we have a small wedding reception to plan,” Serah said excitedly.
