Robert’s home was ablaze. The looks his parents and siblings gave him needed no explanation. His mother was livid.
“Robert, are you stupid? Were you aware of this all along?” Robert’s mother asked.
“Yes, she informed me about it,” replied Robert.
“I know I raised you better than this,” Robert’s mother said. She was struggling to express her disappointment.
“What happens if it’s not yours?” Robert’s sister asked.
“We were hoping it was, but I would raise it regardless,” said Robert in a shaky voice.
The family discussion was cut short by a visitor at the door. There was pin-drop silence as Jenny walked into the living room. Robert wanted to disappear. Jenny came in acting bubbly around her soon-to-be in-laws, only to be met with hostility. It threw her off because she didn’t know they knew their secret. The sneer on Robert’s mother’s face stuck with her.
Robert quickly took her out of the house, fearing they would interrogate her as much as they had done with him. He loved Jenny. He had loved her enough to propose to her despite the circumstances, but his family’s reaction instilled doubt in him.
“What’s wrong, babe?” Jenny asked as soon as they were outside.
“They know,” Robert said.
Jenny felt as though she couldn’t breathe. She felt light-headed and looked for something to sit on. Robert carried her weight and then led her to his car. They sat in silence for about ten minutes.
“What did they say? How did they find out?” Jenny asked Robert.
“My sister found out and told my mother, who then told everybody,” Robert replied.
“How did your sister find out?” Jenny asked.
“I might have been drunk and said something about hoping that the kid is mine,” Robert said. He faced away in shame and regret.
“Wow! So much for this being between us.”
“I know Jenny. This is not how I wanted things to turn out,” Robert told Jenny.
“What now?” Jenny asked.
“Honestly, my family was looking at me like I was crazy. I don’t know,” Robert told Jenny.
“Do you still want to get married?” Jenny asked. It was a risky question, and she wasn’t sure she was ready for the answer, but it was about a month before the wedding, and she needed to know.
“I don’t know,” said Robert.
Jenny got out of the car and requested a taxi while standing outside the gate. Robert tried to follow her, but she asked him to leave her alone. She was seven months pregnant. Jenny went home and asked her friend to go over. She got into the shower and cried for almost an hour before coming out.
“What’s going on, Jenny?” Her friend asked.
“Robert’s family know,” Jenny replied.
“How did they find out?” Asked the friend.
“It doesn’t matter, but they want us to cancel the wedding,” said Jenny.
“What about Robert? What does he want?” Her friend asked.
“He’s unsure, so I guess he also doesn’t want to go ahead with it,” said Jenny, struggling to keep her tears at bay.
“You asked him repeatedly if he was okay and committed to you. How can he do this to you?” Her friend asked angrily.
“I don’t even want to think about that. How do I tell my family that the wedding is cancelled because I don’t know who is the father of my unborn child?” Jenny told her friend.
Jenny had been going out on dates with two guys. She hadn’t committed to any of them yet when she found out that she was pregnant. Once she told Robert about it, he asked her to date him. He liked Jenny a lot. Jenny had been open with him about the other guy, but Robert still decided he wanted to be with her.
After talking for a while, the friend suggested that Jenny should tell her mother regardless of Robert’s decision. They tried to find a way to inform her family. Jenny dreaded seeing her mother’s disappointment. She had been so excited about the wedding. Additionally, her family adored Robert. They were happy with her choice of her husband, and she would have to break their hearts over something that was her fault.
“Jenny, what is this I’m hearing about the wedding?” Jenny’s mother asked the following morning. Jenny didn’t even get the chance to break the news to her family.
“Let me come over and explain,” said Jenny. The journey home had been the longest two hours of her entire life. There was no nice way of delivering the news. She had already seen the reaction of Robert’s family and expected the same judgement from hers. Meanwhile, Robert kept texting her, but she couldn’t find the words to respond to him. Initially, when she told him that she wasn’t sure about the child’s paternity, Robert assured her that he was willing to raise the child regardless of the outcome. She had repeatedly told him that he might change his mind, but his answer had been consistent.
“I am sure about my feelings for you, Jenny. I want you and your unborn child, whether he’s mine or not,” Ben had told her. He had eventually proposed to her. She was three months pregnant. She finally believed him and agreed to get married. He was now unsure about his decision, and it felt like a betrayal.
“Jenny, we’re here for you, no matter the situation,” said Jenny’s mother after seeing the sadness in her eyes.
That warm welcome gave Jenny the green light to break down. She narrated the story to her mother. Jenny cried but later realized that she felt lighter. Keeping the secret had weighed heavily on her for months. Despite the judgement and the wedding cancellation, she realized she no longer worried about the secret ruining things.
After a few days at home, she called Robert.
“I was worried about you,” said Robert.
“I’m okay. So, we can send a joint statement about cancelling the wedding to family and friends, and I will call the wedding planner to deal with the vendors,” Jenny told Robert.
“I still want to be with you, Jenny. Maybe we can do a DNA Test before the wedding?” Robert pleaded.
“Can we first focus on the wedding cancellation? I also need to focus on the birth of my child,” Jenny responded.
“Our child,” said Robert.
“Perhaps it is, but we can talk about that after we confirm if he’s yours,” Jenny said firmly. She decided to focus on the child.
“What about you and Robert?” Her friend asked her later after informing her of her decision.
“I understand his hesitation, but it still hurts. If the child is his, we’ll see how it goes, but I will focus on my child for now,” said Jenny.
