When I was 18, I discovered I was only attracted to older women. While the rest of my friends dated girls who were the same age, I wanted the university girls. I thought it was simply an infatuation that would go away with time but it never did. Luckily, I looked older than my age so I was able to attract older women even when I was 18. However, it’s becoming a problem as I get older since the girls I’m attracted to right now are in their 30s while I’m in my mid-20s. I can’t provide for them the lifestyle that men their age mates can and it’s getting hard to get a date. Additionally, my friends are settling down and building serious relationships while I’m still chasing older women.

So, I made it a mission to meet a girl who I’d be able to settle down with. As I scouted around, I saw a beautiful girl walking by my apartment building. I had seen her several times before but decided to finally approach her. What was the worst that could happen? Rejection? I had experienced that so many times that it didn’t scare me anymore. However, I made sure that I said and did everything right so she wouldn’t have a reason to reject me since I liked her and had a feeling she could be a serious girlfriend.

I hurriedly grabbed my car keys and tried to catch up with her. I drove for a few minutes towards the direction she was headed and spotted her walking along the road. After rehearsing my line, I stopped my car next to her and she turned.

“Can I give you a lift?” I asked.

She smiled and answered, “Sure, I’m just going up the road.”

She came in and immediately reached for a hug. I then started asking her a million questions at once.

“What’s your name? I’m Nelson, by the way. Where are you going? Can you visit me today?” I asked excitedly.

I could tell she was overwhelmed by the questions but she was too nice to say anything. So, I stayed quiet to allow her to talk.

“Wow… those are so many questions. I’m Amanda. What else did you ask?”

“Where are you going?”

“Shopping.”

“Can I cook for you tonight?”

“No, I have plans.”

“Okay. Can I get your number?”

She was quiet for a minute then agreed and gave me her number. Before alighting, I hugged her one more time and watched as she got out of the car.

I couldn’t stop thinking about her the whole day. I got back home around midnight and called her immediately to tell her good night.

“Am I seeing you tomorrow?” I asked.

“Okay.” She answered.

“I can’t wait. Goodnight, beautiful.”

“Goodnight.” She answered and then hung up.

The following day, I went about my business and then went home a bit early so I could meet up with Amanda. On the way home, I passed by my local liquor shop to buy a bottle of gin then went to pick Amanda up at her apartment. She came out wearing a crop top and ragged jeans which I wasn’t a big fan of but she looked nice, nonetheless.

We got to my place and the night started. It was a lot of fun and I was happy that I got along with her. I thought that finally, my curse of being attracted to older women had been broken. We talked and danced all night. By the time we went to bed, it was almost 6 am.

I woke up, took a shower and prepared to head out. As I was getting ready, Amanda asked me to send her money for lunch.

“I’m hungry, babe.” She said.

“I’m also hungry. Why don’t you cook for me?”

“I’ll cook when you come to my place.”

“Okay. I don’t have money right now. I’ve spent a lot servicing my car.”

“How can you have such a nice place and don’t have money?”

“I just told you I spent the money I had servicing my car.”

“Okay.”

“I’ll come visit you tonight. What will you cook for me?”

“I don’t know. Let me figure out what I’ll eat right now.” She answered.

I dropped her off at her place and went to do business. In the evening, I called her to ask if she was around.

“I’m around.” She said.

“Did you cook?”

“Not yet. What do you want to eat?”

“Anything.”

“Okay. I’ll figure it out when you come.”

I got to her place. She had a nicely furnished apartment and it smelled nice too. I’ll never forget that smell.

Like before, we started drinking, talking and enjoying the music. Then one thing led to another and we ended up sleeping together. Since I was tired from a long day’s work, I slept immediately after.

I woke up a few hours later feeling so hungry. Amanda was in bed with me but she got up when I woke up.

I made my way to the kitchen looking for something to eat. I noticed that she hadn’t cooked so I started looking for snacks.

“What do you have to eat?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“Do you have snacks?”

“No.” She answered bluntly. “I told you to give me money so I could cook for you.”

I didn’t want to argue with her. Even if I wanted to, I didn’t have the energy.

Desperately, I asked her to make me coffee and bread since I was so hungry. She made it for me and I ate quickly before leaving.

I went to a butchery and bought half a kilo of roast beef with Ugali which I devoured like I hadn’t eaten in days. As I sat in the butchery, I replayed the events of that evening in disbelief. I had never left a woman’s house without eating.

I wondered if that was what it meant to date younger women and realized why I preferred dating older women. If only I just stuck to older women, I wouldn’t ever have had to deal with that. At least, I now know that I’m not missing anything on that side. If anything, it’s a loss dating a younger woman.
