Raj was excited. One of his favourite artists was going to be in town in a month. He had always wanted to watch the artist perform live. Like any person who is in love, he wanted to share this special moment with his girlfriend, Vanessa.
“Van, I’m getting tickets for the concert before they sell out. I want to get one for you too,” Raj told his girlfriend.
“Uhm, don’t get mine yet. I’m not sure I’ll be available on that date,” responded Vanessa.
“Oh what plans do you have?” Raj asked her. He was surprised because she hadn’t mentioned any impending plans.
“Is this an interrogation?” Vanessa asked Raj.
“Why are you being defensive? I’m just asking,” said Raj.
“You’re all over my business,” Vanessa responded.
“Where is this coming from?” Asked a confused Raj.
What was supposed to be a quick conversation turned into a fight. Raj didn’t understand why Vanessa was trying to pick a fight with him. He felt his question was reasonable. Further, Vanessa had never complained about how much he was invested in her affairs. They had a few days of silence and then went back to normalcy — or at least that’s what Raj thought.
Two weeks to the concert, Raj asked Vanessa if she had confirmed her plans. Vanessa got into a mood and told him that she didn’t even like that genre of music, so she would be bored at the concert. Raj was disappointed. He tried to persuade her to go, but Vanessa got rude. He resigned to the fact that he would attend the concert without her.
The next two weeks of their relationship were filled with ups and downs. On some days, Raj felt like they were okay, but Vanessa would also act out without valid reasons. It felt like she was out to get him. Two days before the concert, Vanessa offered to take Raj out for dinner.
“I’m sorry I’m not going for the concert with you. I know how much you’re looking forward to it,” she told Raj.
“It’s not too late. I can still get you the ticket, if you want to come,” Raj told Vanessa.
“No. You go and enjoy.”
They tried to enjoy the night. They decided to go bowling after early dinner and later went out for drinks. It felt like old times. They had a blast that night and went to Raj’s place in the morning. Finally, the concert day came. Raj was a punctual person, and he wanted to get a good view of the performances. He had also gotten a few of his friends to attend the concert too. Although he enjoyed their company, Vanessa’s presence would have made a difference.
The group met up and found their way to the venue. The line-up included three more acts. However, Raj’s favourite artist was the main act. They were able to find space with a great view of the stage. The performances were amazing. Raj was having the time of his life. He decided to grab a bite before the main act’s performance.
As he was waiting in line to get food, he saw a pop-up store next to the food place selling novelties that Vanessa would love. He passed by on his way back to the performance area of the concert. He had hardly set foot inside the store when he heard a familiar laughter. It couldn’t be his girlfriend, so he turned to see who had laughter similar to his girlfriend’s. Only it was his girlfriend.
Vanessa was holding another guy’s waist. They were facing each other as the guy touched Vanessa’s neckpiece. It looked like he had just gotten her the neckpiece. She saw Raj looking at her. The laughter stopped, and they both froze. Raj felt dizzy. After what felt like an eternity, Raj finally found words.
“Great neckpiece,” said Raj. He then walked away towards his friends. Vanessa runs after him. “Raj! Raj!” She called out to him. He kept walking until he got lost in the crowd. He got to his friends just in time. His favourite artist was getting on stage.
He sang his heart out. All the emotions he felt were channelled to it. Meanwhile, Vanessa was blowing up his phone. Raj tried ignoring it, but not before one of his friends saw the calls and texts he was ignoring.
“Why are you ignoring Vanessa?” One of his friends asked. He put the phone on airplane mode as he enjoyed and recorded parts of the performance. Once the performance was over, he frantically asked for a drink from his friends. The friend who had seen the missed calls asked him again, “Is everything okay with Vanessa?”
“Man! She is cheating on me. I just saw her with some dude,” replied Raj.
“Here?” Asked another friend.
“Yeah. She was in his arms laughing and all,” said a bitter Raj. He narrated the whole incident from Vanessa, claiming she couldn’t stand the genre of finding her in the arms of that guy. Vanessa was still texting Raj at this point. When he didn’t respond, she called one of the friends Raj was with, but he also declined to pick up the call.
As they were leaving the venue, they found Vanessa at the exit. It looked like she had strategically stood there. She followed Raj, trying to talk to him. Raj finally turned in her direction. “What Vanessa?” Raj said. Then he saw it. “And you’re still the stupid neckpiece,” Raj said as he walked away again. Vanessa touched her neck as though to hide or remove the neckpiece. “Can we go to your place? I’m so sorry Raj. I want to explain,” said Vanessa.
“Vanessa, I don’t want to hear anything from you. You have already ruined this night enough,” said Raj.
He left with his friends. He later learned that the guy Vanessa was with got angry when she chased after Raj and left her at the concert, too. She had been cheating on him for two months.
