I have never understood why I’m only attracted to my close friends. No matter how hard I try to date other girls, nothing serious ever happens and I always end up in a relationship with one of my friends. I’ve had the same group of friends since I was 18 years old and I’ve dated three girls from the group so far.
Luckily, they’re not the bitter ex-type. On the contrary, they make fun of me for being a “player”. They have given me the nickname ‘lover boy’ which I don’t like since I don’t choose to be attracted to my close friends. Additionally, it makes me seem like I change girls like clothes which I don’t.
It all started with Ruth, my first serious girlfriend. I met her at university and introduced her to my group of friends. She quickly became a part of the group but we didn’t start dating immediately. In fact, it would take me almost a year to make a move on her. My friends thought that it was a fling that would end within a few months but we dated for almost two years.
We did everything together – went to class together, had lunch together, and partied together. She was more than a close friend. She was my best friend. When we broke up, everyone was surprised since they truly believed we would get married.
Ruth started becoming insecure since I was growing closer to one of our other friends, Clara. The jealousy and insecurity became too much and we decided to end things.
“Why did you guys break up?” One of our friends asked.
We tried to brush off the question but our friends wouldn’t let it go. So, Ruth decided to let the cat out of the bag.
“He doesn’t like me anymore. He has a new crush.” She answered.
Everyone chuckled since they knew exactly what she was talking about. Towards the end of my relationship with Ruth, Clara and I had been spending a lot of time together. Though I cared for Ruth, I couldn’t help but fall for Clara. She was my first crush but she had been playing hard to get and I ended up dating Ruth. Finally, she admitted that she always had a thing for me but was scared that I was a player.
“I thought that you weren’t serious but seeing you with Clara changed my mind.” She confessed.
“So, there’s a chance?” I asked excitedly.
“Aren’t you still in a relationship with her?” She asked.
“We’ve been having a lot of issues. She thinks that I have a crush on you.”
“Well, if you’re single then there’s definitely a chance.”
Shortly after this conversation, I let the rest of the group know that Ruth and I were not together anymore.
“It’s so funny how your ex and your current girlfriend are still close friends.” One of my friends said.
It was funny but I worried that it was a recipe for disaster. I wanted a serious relationship with Clara and I thought that Ruth would get in the way of things. However, she was surprisingly nice to us.
When we parted ways, she didn’t say a bad word about me and we continued being friends just like before. She even gave Clara advice on being in a relationship with me. It was strange but I was happy about it.
Clara and I dated for almost four years. It was the longest relationship I have had to this day. Both of us were even considering marriage. However, it would never be.
Clara got an opportunity to work abroad and she grabbed it. I didn’t want her to leave but it was an opportunity of a lifetime and she didn’t want to lose it. Everything happened so fast and within a few months, she had left.
“I’ll call you every day.” She promised just before she boarded the plane.
Sure enough, she kept in touch but it was evident that a long-distance relationship wouldn’t work. Since I had a great job and didn’t plan on relocating any time soon, we decided to end the relationship.
Once again, I was heartbroken and found comfort in one of my close friends. Janet was Ruth’s best friend and she became a part of our group after Ruth introduced her to us. Though she was part of the group, we weren’t that close but fate would bring us together.
While Clara was out of the country, I was considering moving with her and asked Janet, who was a lawyer, to help me know what my options were. We talked almost every day and our conversation moved from professional to friendly.
“I can’t believe how long it took for me to realize how amazing you are,” I said to her over the phone.
“Well, thank you, George. You’re so sweet.” She answered.
I found myself smiling and giggling every time we talked and soon enough, we got into a relationship.
Though I knew Ruth didn’t have a problem with me being in a relationship, I didn’t know how she would feel about me dating her best friend. We kept the relationship a secret for a couple of months, pretending that she was still helping me with the immigration process.
However, it wasn’t hard for the rest of the group to know that there was something more going on.
“Are you and Janet dating?” My friend asked.
“Yes, but don’t tell Ruth. I don’t know if she’ll be happy about it.”
“She won’t care. She was happy about your relationship with Clara.”
“That was different. Janet is her best friend and she might feel jealous.”
“I think you should tell her. Keeping secrets from her only makes things worse.”
I finally told Ruth the truth after my friend pressured me. She wasn’t happy about it but she didn’t tell me to end the relationship either.
“Just don’t break her heart.” She said.
“I would never.”
“What if Clara comes back?” She asked.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” I answered.
We never got to that bridge because Janet and I broke up only two months after we officially started dating. Nonetheless, the friend group has remained strong. We have been through a lot of things that should have broken us including relationship drama, yet we still show up for each other.
