Ciku anxiously waited for Val, her best friend, to respond. The message came in, and it was full of laughing emojis.

“Can you stop laughing? I’m in a crisis here,” Ciku replied.

“Maybe tell him to join you in the shower?” Val told her.

“He’ll get the wrong idea because after knowing what I know, that ‘department’ went permanently off for him,” Ciku wrote and added an emoji expressing disappointment.

“Then rip off the Band-Aid and tell him si uoge. I think it sounds more polite in Swahili than in English,” Val responded.

“How am I even in this situation? Anyway, thanks and wish me luck!” Responded Ciku as Sam walked into the living room.

He tried to kiss her, but she turned her face so his lips landed on her cheek. He noticed it was deliberate, but he didn’t vocalize his thoughts. This wasn’t the visit he had envisioned. Sam had always hosted Ciku for weekend sleepovers over the two months of their relationship, but they had decided it was time for him to go to Ciku’s for a change.

However, Sam could tell something was off on the third day of his visit. Suddenly, Ciku was no longer responsive to his physical advances. She also seemed irritable and had unconvincing reasons behind the change of attitude. Sam didn’t know this side of her as she was primarily jolly at his place. He didn’t know what to make of it.

Ciku looked at Sam from the corners of her eyes. She could tell that he knew something was wrong. It was frustrating that he couldn’t figure it out on his own. “I shouldn’t need to have this conversation with a grown adult man,” she thought. It had taken this unexpected situation to change her opinion about him. His coolness suddenly disappeared. The warmness she felt when he held up his dreadlocks had been replaced by a feeling closest to disgust. She subconsciously checked the pillow for hair and oil after he woke up.

His butt, which she had found incredibly attractive, had quickly lost its allure. She had confessed to Val that she couldn’t help visualizing him in his boxer briefs because he had the nicest ass she had ever seen on a man.

“How does a man have a cute butt?” Val had asked her.

“I don’t know. I have never been fascinated by one before, but something about Sam’s makes me want to grab it and do naughty things to him,” Ciku responded, blushing.

“Eeew, TMI (too much information) but you have officially piqued my curiosity. I’ll be sure to have a look,” said Val.

“Just a quick look, that boy is mine!” Ciku said as they both laughed.

A tap on her shoulder interrupted her thoughts.

“Ciku, I think our vibe is off. What’s the matter?” Sam asked her.

“Nothing, I’m just having a creative block and I need to finish creating a website for a client,” Ciku lied.

“Is that why you slept on the couch yesterday?” Sam asked her.

“Yes, I lost track of time and dozed off on the couch.”

“Okay, I thought you were avoiding me,” Sam responded, changing his position to watch the telly.

Ciku went to the kitchen to prepare dinner, angry at herself for lacking the courage to tell him the truth. “Dumb girl and your confrontation avoidance! You should probably ‘accidentally’ pour water on him to prompt him to change,” she told herself. She was a lousy actress and knew he would see through her if she pulled such a move. Finally, she consoled herself that he would be leaving the following day, so she just needed an excuse to sleep on the couch again.

They had dinner together, and then she went to take a shower. She still clung to the hope that this would nudge him to do the same. After changing into pyjamas, she returned to the living room with a mini duvet.

“You look like someone prepared to spend the night on the couch,” Sam commented.

“It’s cold,” Ciku responded.

“I don’t even know how you took a shower in this weather,” Sam replied.

“It’s a hot shower so it’s not a bother.”

“This is the weather to snuggle and stay warm,” said Sam.

“So what if the weather remains this bad all month long?” Ciku asked him.

“Of course not,” Sam said with a look of irritation as though it was apparent that he couldn’t stay that long without a shower.

“Oh well, you’re four days in,” Ciku said and regretted saying it as soon as it came out of her mouth.

Suddenly, Sam understood why Ciku had been behaving strangely.

“I didn’t plan on staying this long so I didn’t have a change of clothes,” he defended himself. “I didn’t know I had overstayed my welcome.”

“I live next to the mall and we’ve been going to get foodstuff almost daily,” Ciku said.

“I can’t believe we’re having this conversation. I’m going to leave immediately,” said Sam.

“I think that’s for the best,” Ciku responded.

Sam took a taxi home feeling embarrassed and defensive. Ciku decided to do some cleaning after Sam left and started by changing her sheets and pillowcases. She, too, felt embarrassed about the whole situation and puzzled by Sam’s behaviour. She couldn’t wrap her mind around the fact that he expected them to be physically intimate after abstaining from taking a bath the whole time he was there. She started overthinking and felt grossed out by him. They didn’t speak again.
