The Singlehood Series: He Showed Up To The Date With A Bad Flu

He offered to take care of me as I nursed a flu but he had other plans.

Having the flu can get in the way of your day-to-day life. Most people choose to stay at home when they have the flu since it’s contagious and no one wants to be around them, especially when they’re seriously sick. However, there are those that don’t care about etiquette and go out in public with a runny nose and cough. It’s not only annoying but unsanitary.

I met a new guy recently and I was pretty excited about it since I had been single for the longest time. He was equally excited and we started planning our first date soon after we met. We bonded over how single we were and how the cold is affecting single people.

“This weather is for being indoors,” I said.

“Tell me about it.”

“I can’t wait for the hot weather.”

“Why?”

“So I can enjoy more outdoor activities.”

“Yeah. But this weather is perfect for cuddling.”

“True, but neither of us has a cuddle buddy.”

“Maybe we should cuddle together.”

I laughed. Tony always made me laugh when we talked over the phone so I couldn’t wait for us to meet in person. I knew that he would be even funnier when we met. However, something always kept coming up that made us postpone our date every time. First, he got a work emergency that required him to travel out of town. Then, I had a family meeting that I couldn’t avoid.

By the time we settled on a date, we had been talking for a month and a half. Many things had changed. I felt like I knew Tony more and we were more comfortable being ourselves. I would tell him when I was having a bad day and he would tell me how his day went. It felt like we had a real connection.

At last, we were able to set a date and we agreed that we wouldn’t postpone or cancel it.

“We’re meeting this weekend, come rain or shine.” He said.

“Okay. I’ll clear up my schedule.”

“If you get an emergency, I’ll come with you.” He joked.

“That would be fun too.”

He suggested that we should go to a high-end restaurant for our date which I agreed to. I knew that we would have fun regardless of where we went but it was good to dine in a fancy restaurant for a change. Additionally, it was a good excuse to dress up and feel good despite the cold weather. It was the first date I had been on in a while and I planned on enjoying myself to the fullest. Thankfully, I was going to be in good company.

We agreed to meet at the restaurant around 7 pm. However, Tony was late for the date which made me worry.

“Did he stand me up?” I wondered.

As I drank my glass of wine and scrolled through my phone, I saw a familiar face walking in and my demeanour changed immediately. I was so excited to meet him in person but as soon as he came closer, I noticed that he had the flu. His nose was stuffed and his eyes were puffy.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yes, I just have the flu but I’m fine.”

“You didn’t tell me you were sick. We would have rescheduled.”

“We promised not to change the date.”

“Yes, but if you’re feeling unwell, you don’t have to come.”

“It’s not that bad.” He said then sneezed.

Things only got worse from there. He could hardly finish a sentence before he either blew his nose or coughed. The date was a disaster and the complete opposite of what I thought it would be.

My appetite was completely gone. I barely spoke or ate since I didn’t want to get sick. Even the waiters were uncomfortable since no one wanted to get the flu.

Tony, on the other hand, didn’t seem to notice or care that he was making everyone uncomfortable. He kept talking throughout the date and didn’t seem like he was in a hurry to leave. In fact, we stayed at the restaurant until they started closing up.

“Should we leave?” I asked.

“Yes, we can go back to my place.” He suggested

“Not today,” I answered.

I would have gone back with him under normal circumstances but I didn’t want to be in close contact with him while he had the flu. I didn’t even want to share an Uber with him but since he was paying for the ride, I had no choice.

When I got to my place, I couldn’t wait to get out of the car. Tony kept saying how he had fun and couldn’t wait to see me again. He even tried to kiss me on the lips but I moved and he kissed me on my cheek.

When I got to my place, I immediately got undressed and took a shower. I didn’t want to risk getting the flu. However, my efforts were futile and I ended up getting sick a few days later. It was just as bad as Tony’s and I had to stay home for almost a week until I was healed.

Tony offered to come and take care of me since he was the one who made me sick. I thought it was a good idea and since I was sick, I needed someone to take care of me. He came during the weekend but things were painfully awkward. It was obvious that he wasn’t there to take care of me. He tried to make a move on me several times which irritated me. I asked him to leave and we never met after that day.

I never expected my encounter with Tony to be that disastrous. Apart from showing up with the flu to the date, it turned out that he was only after sex and he didn’t care about having a meaningful relationship. All I got from him was the flu.
