I have met all sorts of men but none like my ex. This man is the definition of fake it till you make it. The thing is he believed his own lies so much that he’ll go above and beyond to prove them. I could never get a straight answer from him. I knew this when we were dating and it was one of the reasons we broke up. However, when he asked me out on a date three years after we broke up I thought things would be different. I guess it’s true when they say a tiger never changes his stripes.

Henry was a professional liar. Whether he was trying to explain his whereabouts or what he was doing, he always lied. However, his biggest lie was his bank account. He always flaunted a lavish lifestyle but according to his friends, he was broke and lived off other people. He also lied about his age. At the time he told me he was 26 years old only for me to find out he was 31. I vowed never to talk to him and blocked him on every app when we finally broke up.

However, one day when I was out and about, I bumped into him. I was visiting my friend at her workplace when I saw a familiar face. He came up to him and I confirmed that it was Henry. We chatted for a short while since he was working then he asked me out on a date. Normally, I would have said a hard no but he looked like he had changed. He had a good job and looked more mature now. So, I decided to give it a shot.

“Are you free on Saturday?” He asked

“I’m not sure. I’ll confirm and let you know.” I replied.

Though I was willing to give him another chance, I had to do some investigating. I didn’t want another character development. So, I checked with my friend whether he, indeed, worked at that company.

“You see that guy,” I started.

“Henry?”

“You know him?”

“Of course. He’s one of the finance guys.”

“Oh..”

“Was he hitting on you? He likes to flirt with everyone.”

That sounded just like him. I was happy that for once he wasn’t lying to me. He might have been a pathological liar but Henry had a lot of good qualities that made me date him. Now that he had turned a new leaf, I thought he would make the perfect boyfriend the second time around.

I was quite excited about the date. Henry and I had talked a few times after we bumped into each other and he had hyped up the date.

“I want you to feel like a princess.” He said.

“Really? What do you have planned?”

“You’ll see but I’m sure you’ll have fun.”

“I can’t wait,” I answered excitedly.

That Saturday, I left the house around 11 am to go and get my hair and nails done in town. I wanted to look my best for this one-of-a-kind date. However, when I got to my usual beauty parlour, they were booked and I had to wait. By the time I was done with my nails and hair, it was well past 5 pm and I was supposed to meet Henry around 5.30 pm. I didn’t have time to go back and change so I decided to go as I was. After all, I still looked good.

“Where are you?” He asked

“I’m in town. Where do I meet you?” I answered thinking we were going to meet in town.

“Can you come to Total in Westlands? I’ll pick you from there.”

Pick me? The comment caught me by surprise. I didn’t know that he had a car but again, I was happily surprised.

“Okay. I’ll be there in a few.”

I got there in around ten minutes and found Henry waiting beside a sleek, black Subaru. I could no longer contain my excitement.

“Is this yours?”, I asked him.

“Of course.” He answered while opening the door for me.

I got in and it still had that new car smell. Everything was so shiny and new. I kept looking around and looking at Henry.

“It’s so nice.” I found myself saying.

“Thanks.”

We caught up for a few minutes as we debated where to go.

“What about Sankara?” He asked

“I’m not dressed for Sankara. I’ve been running errands all day.”

“What do you mean? You look amazing.”

“I’m in sneakers.”

“I love sneakers.” He said.

Finally, we agreed to go to Westgate. He started the car but struggled to reverse it out of the parking lot. We almost hit the parked cars and I had to come out and direct him. However, it was when we got to the main road that madness ensued. He kept slamming on the brakes which would send me lunging towards the dashboard.

I hit my head several times and all he could say was “sorry”. He almost ran over two bodaboda riders on our way and slightly grazed a matatu. After a slew of insults and a small compensation, we were back on our way. The whole ride took almost 45 minutes and normally, it would take no more than 20 minutes. Parking the car in the mall was also a problem.

I started to doubt whether the car belonged to him or if he even knew how to drive. I could have done a better job and I haven’t driven in years. The date was a bit awkward after that and we didn’t get along at all. He tried to say that he was nervous because I was there but I know a bad driver when I see one.

I ordered an Uber after the date and went home by myself. There was no way I was going to let him drive me home after that experience. I don’t know how he got home but he texted me that he had, two hours later. I just hope that the car belonged to him because I want to believe that he had changed and he wasn’t the pathological liar I once dated. However, it’s none of my business whether he still is because there’s no chance in hell that I will ever get back with him.
