“It hurts me every time I have to visit my mother in prison,” Martin said to his girlfriend.
His mother had been in prison for more than ten years for the murder of his father but he vividly remembers the event of that day like it was yesterday.
He was only 9 years old when she was arrested. The police stormed into their house where they found Martin’s father lying in a pool of blood. Martin was hiding behind one of the neighbours who had called the police after hearing gunshots and seeing what had happened to Martin’s father. They took his father’s body and arrested his mother.
Before the police left their home, Martin managed to say a few words.
“She didn’t do it.” He said. “There was another man in the house. He shot my father.”
The police wrote down this information and then asked the neighbour to take him in for the night. Martin spent that night at his neighbour’s home and they went to see Monica, his mother the following day.
“What happened?” The neighbour asked.
“I don’t know. This man came to my home and shot my husband.”
“Do you know the man?”
“Yes, we had an affair but I didn’t think it would get to this point.”
The other man had already been arrested and the police were able to piece the case together. After he confessed to shooting Monica’s husband, Nyaga’s trial was quick and he was sentenced to life in prison. However, the case was still not over. Monica was still an accused person even though she maintained her innocence. Nyaga also insisted that she had no idea of what he was planning to do.
The police didn’t buy their story. They had seen these kinds of cases hundreds of times and in almost all instances, the other spouse was involved in the crime.
They were right. Following anonymous tips, the police were able to get evidence that linked Monica to the crime and she was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Ten years later, Monica still struggled to accept her fate. She never imagined that her life would turn out the way it did. When she met Nyaga, she was a lonely housewife who craved a man’s attention. Nyaga was a young and fit police officer and 10 years her junior but the unusual pair fell in love.
Their love was red hot, unlike her stale marriage. She looked for any and every excuse to see her young lover who would have done anything to be with her. Monica’s husband started to notice a change in her demeanour and started to monitor her. He soon found out that she was having an affair and confronted her about it.
“You better end that affair before I end it for you. You will not make me a laughing stock in the community because of a small boy.” He barked.
Monica’s husband was a big, dominant man who ruled his household with an iron fist. Monica knew of his wrath and didn’t want to test him so she decided to end the relationship with Nyaga.
What she didn’t know was that her boy toy was developing an unhealthy obsession with her and wasn’t going to go down without a fight.
“If he wasn’t in the picture, I would be married to her.” He was overheard saying as he drank at his local pub.
I would go to prison for her.” He said to his friend.
“Don’t be foolish. If you go to prison, she’ll move on with another man.” His friend advised him.
Nyaga had already decided that Monica’s husband was his biggest enemy and the only reason he wasn’t together with his woman.
The pair continued to meet secretly but Monica always expressed her concerns about her husband.
“If he finds out that I’m still seeing you, he’ll kill me.” She said,
“No one will ever hurt you as long as I’m alive.”
“Sometimes, I wish he was dead.”
“What if we kill him?” Nyaga asked.
Monica thought that Nyaga was joking but he insisted that he was willing to kill because of her. Then, she realized that if her husband was out of the picture, she would not only be free to date her young lover but also she would have control of all his money.
“Okay, let’s do it.” She answered coldly.
Monica drew him a map of their house to help him navigate his way inside.
“I’ll leave the back door open.” She said, “Once you get in, go to the living room and get the job done. I’ll say it was a robbery.”
That night, Nyaga went to Monica’s house and shot her husband four times.
Martin and his girlfriend got to the prison and waited for his mother to come and meet them as they always did.
“Your son is here to see you.” The guard said and the middle-aged woman who was sitting on her bed got up.
Every time the pair reunited, it was like they were seeing each other for the first time. She missed hugging and kissing her son but tried to put on a strong front for his sake.
“I brought you the medicine you needed.” He said, showing her the bag full of medicine through the glass window.
They spent almost two hours catching up on life before Martin and his girlfriend left. This was the way she would spend the rest of her life. She could only experience all her son’s major life moments through a thick glass window in prison. It was a painful reality but her reality, nonetheless. She did the crime and now she had to do the time. However, she was thankful that her son still loved and cared for her despite her crime.
Everyone turned against her, including her own mother, after she was found guilty of murder but somehow, her son forgave her and continued to love her. That kept her going through all those years in prison. To Monica, as long as her son still loved her, nothing else mattered.
