It took nearly 8 years for Daniel to propose to me. When I met him, I was a young, hot 24-year-old fresh out of campus with the whole world in front of me. He was a finance guy at the company I worked for as an intern and we ended up falling madly in love with each other. To be honest, I knew Daniel was the guy I would spend the rest of my life with within months of dating him. However, he didn’t seem to be on the same page and it took him 8 years to make me his fiancé, not even his wife.

Daniel was a sweet, quiet and likeable guy. He seemed to be especially popular among the ladies but as I got to know him I realized it was because he was very selfless. He was the type of guy that bought coffee for his friends every day without asking for anything in return. When we were dating, he would buy me things that I didn’t even know I needed.

Everything was perfect. However, there was one small issue. He had a female best friend and if you know anything about these “besties” then you know it was a red flag. She was equally sweet and soft-spoken so I didn’t instantly get alarmed. In fact, we became really close and would go out on dates together. She ended up becoming my best friend.

“How’s everything?” She asked.

“Everything is good but Daniel isn’t popping the question. We’ve been together for 3 years.”

“Give him another year. Besides, you’re still young.”

“I’m 27, darling. I should be married by now.”

“It will happen.”

She was quite supportive of our relationship and honestly, she’s the one who made me wait for Daniel to propose for 8 years. Whenever I had an issue with Daniel, I would turn to her. Now, looking back at it, she was probably using anything I told her as ammunition.

For the most part, nothing was wrong with the relationship so I figured if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Daniel was loyal, or at least I thought he was. We had a fun and loving relationship and even the small issues we had were quickly resolved. However, after 5 years of dating, I finally decided to confront him about taking things to the next level and making me his fiancé.

“You promised you’d propose a year ago yet nothing seems to happen. Every time we go on a date or vacation, I get my hopes up then it ends in disappointment. I need you to be honest with me, Daniel. Are you ever going to propose?” I remember vividly asking him.

He paused for a minute then looked at me as if trying to figure out the right words to say. Finally, he spoke up.

“I love you, Viv, but I don’t think marriage is for me. I’m almost turning 40 and I still can’t bring myself to propose.”

I broke down in tears after he confessed.

“What is it? Is it me? Am I not good enough?”

“It’s not you. I just don’t want to get married.”

“Don’t you think you should have told me that years ago?”

“We can still be a family. We just don’t have to get married.” He concluded.

With those words, I bought into his lies again. Even after he had shattered my dreams of walking down the aisle and becoming a wife, I still stuck by his side.

“Maybe he’ll change his mind.” I confided in my best friend once again.

Indeed, he changed his mind. I somehow wore him down and got the proposal I had been waiting for for 8 years. It wasn’t glamorous but at least I was his fiancé. He actually proposed to me at our apartment after a drunken night out. I almost didn’t remember about it the following day but the shiny diamond ring on my finger brought back the memories.

We decided to host an engagement party since we didn’t have the most romantic proposal. Daniel seemed a bit too okay with everything considering he had refused to propose for years. Now, he wanted the whole thing including marriage.

“You know, babe, you should start planning a wedding. I want to get married as soon as possible.”

“One step at a time, babe. Let’s plan the engagement party first.”

A few weeks before the engagement party, Daniel seemed hesitant but I thought it was because he didn’t like big crowds. Additionally, Fiona had become distant despite the fact that I needed her assistance in planning the engagement party. It felt like everything was falling apart. However, I didn’t want anything to ruin my big day so I planned the whole thing alone.

Even if we had grown apart, I still invited Fiona since it was her encouragement that made me stay with Daniel. She was an important part of our relationship. Surprisingly, she replied and confirmed her attendance.

“Babe, Fiona is coming!” I told my fiancé in excitement. He didn’t seem too happy about it but didn’t say anything.

The engagement party was absolutely beautiful. Everything was going according to plan and everyone seemed to be having a good time. However, Daniel was fidgety and kept checking his phone. His behaviour was a bit unusual even for him but I didn’t pay much attention to it.

Fiona arrived rather late and also looked dishevelled. I confronted her about her lateness but she barely acknowledged me. She went straight to my fiancé and I could see that they were arguing. As I came closer, Daniel tried to pull Fiona away.

“I’m not going anywhere until you tell her.” She said.

“Tell me what?” I asked.

“Your fiancé and I have been having an affair for years. He only proposed because I threatened to tell you about it.”

After the revelation, Daniel dragged Fiona to his car as I followed them behind demanding answers.

“You’re really going to leave with her after everything?” I shouted as they sped off.

That was the most embarrassing day of my life. From that day, I never talked to Daniel again. He sent his brother to pick up his things from our apartment who was also in the dark about what was going on. However, a year after my disastrous engagement party, I finally got some closure. I ran into Fiona at a supermarket as she pushed a baby stroller. Though we didn’t say a word to each other, I knew without a doubt that it was Daniel’s baby. I felt even more betrayed. After all those years, I ended up with heartbreak while Daniel got the family that I wanted all along.
