The home is where a lot of accidents usually occur and injury is just a small accident away. Therefore, you should know how dangerous the home can be so you know what to do to avoid accidents. Most people don’t think that they can get hurt in their homes. Well, a study found that almost 53% of all unintentional accidents happen around the house.

The best way to avoid injuries and accidents at home is by taking the necessary precautions. Here are some of the rules you should follow to ensure home safety.

1.    Fire Safety

A fire can break out at the home at any time without notice, spread quickly, and damage your furniture and home putting your family in danger. There are very many things that can cause a fire but there are some things you can do to prevent them from starting.

  • Keep all heaters and fires well-guarded. For portable and fitted heaters with an in-built guard, add a surrounding to give extra protection, especially if you’ve got toddlers or seniors in the house.
  • Keep candles and portable heaters away from curtains and furniture. Position them safely where people can’t knock them over.
  • Don’t smoke in bed.

2.    Cooking and Heating

Safety is even more important when you’re using and choosing heating products. When fuel-burning appliances burn they use up the fresh air, releasing waste gases such as carbon monoxide (CO). Don’t block airbricks or air vents.

Gas flames normally burn blue. If it burns orange, you might have a carbon monoxide issue. Have that gas flame appliance checked immediately if that happens. Before you buy a gas appliance, check for a Seal of Approval and avoid going for those second-hand deals and cowboy installations. Microwave Problems You Should Not Ignore

3.    Electrical Safety

Many injuries, fatalities, and accidents that happen at home involve electricity. You must treat electricity with a lot of respect. Some of the things you should do are;

  • Check your wiring installations at least once a year by approved electrical contractors if you’re living in an old house.
  • Don’t use appliances with damaged or worn-out flexes and keep portable appliances that are main-operated out of your bathroom. If the appliance you’re using seems faulty, have it checked immediately or stop using it completely.

4.    Safety Glass

Low-level ordinary glass products can be very dangerous because when it breaks it splits into huge, jagged pieces which can end up seriously hurting someone. You want to consider fitting safety glass on side panels, glazed doors, etc.

This type of glass is specially made, and the two main types available include toughened glass and laminated glass. It breaks safely when it does and in a way that won’t cause a lot of harm.

5.    Garden Safety

A lack of knowledge and over-ambition are the main things in garden and DIY accidents that cause injury and even death. Be realistic and avoid jobs and tasks that you don’t have the ability to handle.

Keep all your tools clean and ensure they’re in good shape. Before you use any of them, check each and all of them at least once. Always make plans beforehand because most accidents happen due to being unprepared. 8 Kitchen Tools That Can Be Re-Purposed For Gardening

6.    Safety with Cleaners and Medicines

You should always treat chemical preparations of any kind, be it in the form of household cleaners or medicines, with caution. Consider storing them in lockable cabinets or in areas where you can supervise them.

Keep all your medications in clearly labelled containers, preferably the originals. Don’t share your medicine with others and don’t do the same with other people as well. Also don’t hoard leftover medicines. Return them to your pharmacist for proper destruction.
