“Let’s go today, then next weekend you can stay home,” Tina said, pulling my arm so I could get off the couch.

“No, Tina, I’m exhausted,” I said, trying to pull my arm back.

“Just a few hours, then we’ll come back,” She said.

“You promise?” I asked her.

“Yes, Cindy, I promise,” She replied.

“If we stay beyond midnight, I’m leaving you there,” I said as I stood up and headed to my room to change.

Tina smiled as she sat on the couch to wait for me.

I have never been a fan of nightclubs. However, I would go every once in a while, to let loose. Most weekends, I preferred to spend time at home either sleeping or binge-watching a show on Netflix.

On the other hand, Tina loved the nightlife, so she always tried to drag me to where she was going. Almost every weekend, I would find an excuse as to why I couldn’t go. I’m not sure what prompted me to go today, but I had a feeling it would be a good night.

I changed my clothes and put on a little bit of makeup.

“Ready?” Tina asked as I walked into the living room.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Good cause the Uber guy is here,” She replied.

We switched off all the lights and left the house.

When we got to the club, there were already many people making it difficult to find a table.

“Excuse me, is there a table that is free?” I asked a waiter who was standing next to me.

“I’m not sure. Let me check around and let you know,” He responded politely.

Tina and I waited by the entrance for a while as the waiter walked around to see if he could find a table for us. A few minutes later, he came back.

“There is a table at the far end, but I’m afraid you’ll have to share with two other gentlemen,” He said.

“That’s okay; we don’t mind,” Tina responded.

I was uncomfortable sharing a table since I knew how Tina was at the club. We would sit for a while then she would leave me to go flirt or dance with a man. Nevertheless, I accepted since we didn’t have a choice.

When we approached the table, I noticed that one of the guys at the table was my ex-boyfriend from college.

“Hi Marcus,” I said as we got to the table.

“Cindy!” He said in an exciting tone as he stood up to hug me.

I was a bit confused, but I hugged him back.

“I’m here as well,” Tina said, rolling her eyes.

“Hi, I’m Gabriel,” the stranger next to Marcus said as he held out his hand.

“Pleasure to meet you,” Tina replied while shaking his hand.

“Gabriel, this is Cindy and Tina. We know each other from college,” Marcus said as we sat down.

“It’s a pleasure meeting the both of you,” He said.

The waiter who had helped us get the table approached us with a menu.

“Bring a bottle of your finest whisky and Gin as well,” Marcus told the waiter.

“So, Marcus, what do you do these days?” Tina asked.

“Are you asking because you’re curious or want to know if I’m loaded?” Marcus asked with a smile.

“Ahh, you know me; I always want to know what people are up to,” Tina replied while laughing.

“I work in a tech company,” He replied.

“I thought you wanted to be an artist,” I asked.

“Well, you don’t get girls when you’re a starving artist,” He replied.

“Wow!” I replied.

I remained silent after that comment since I knew it was directed at me. Marcus was my first real boyfriend. We instantly clicked when I met him on the first day of college. He was so passionate about art and life itself.

Our conversations were always so lively and intriguing. He was unlike most men who were only interested in clubbing and sex. Our relationship was so beautiful but I realized I wanted a luxurious life at some point.

My friends would constantly get gifts and go on expensive dates with their boyfriends, and I wanted that. So when I finally had the chance to meet someone who could do that for me, I dropped Marcus. To make matters worse, I cheated on him the same day I broke up with him. I still remember the look on his face that day.

“Finally, the drinks are here,” Gabriel said.

The waiter placed the bottles on the table along with the glasses. When he left, the DJ played Tina’s favorite song. The time had come for her to ditch me until it was time to go.

“That’s my song!” She screamed as she stood up.

“I love this song!” Gabriel also screamed.

Great now they were both going to leave me here with Marcus.

“Do you want to dance?” Gabriel asked her.

Tina didn’t respond. Instead, she grabbed his arm and made their way to the dance floor. I decided to pour myself a drink to get the confidence to deal with Marcus.

“I’m sorry for the comment I made earlier,” He said.

“It’s cool, really; you have a right to be mad,” I said.

“I’m not mad anymore; it was a long time ago,” He said.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“Yes,” He said, smiling.

“That’s good to know,” I said.

We spent the rest of the night talking, trying to catch up. Marcus had not changed at all. He was still full of life and still handsome as ever. When the alcohol kicked in, Marcus and I moved to a table near the dance floor. A few people had started heading out, so there was space around. Tina and Gabriel were still on the dance floor, and I eventually joined them.

I woke up the following day with a bad hangover. When I sat up, I realized I wasn’t in my room.

“Good morning, sunshine,” Marcus said as he opened the door.

“Morning,” I said, smiling.

“You were quite the wild one yesterday,” He said.

“Please tell me I didn’t do anything crazy,” I said.

“Let’s see. You did a strip show on the dance floor, vomited twice, and then you passed out,” He replied.

“Oh my God,” I said.

Marcus started laughing.

“Relax, I’m joking,” He said.

“You almost gave me a panic attack,” I replied as I shoved him.

“Okay, the strip part was a lie, but you went to the dance floor. I’m sure those people there will never forget you,” He said.

“I don’t even want to see the video. I swear I’m never drinking again,” I replied.

“How do you know there’s a video?” He asked.

“Tina was probably the one hyping me up, so I’m sure she took a video,” I responded with a laugh.

“Let’s go downstairs. I have a good hangover cure for you,” He said.

When I got out of bed, I realized I was wearing a t-shirt that wasn’t mine.

“I thought you said I passed out; how did I change my clothes?” I asked.

“You didn’t; I did,” He said as he walked out the door.

I was a little embarrassed, but I was glad he was still a good person despite what we had gone through. We spent the rest of the day together since Marcus wanted to ensure I was okay.

In the evening, he offered to give me a ride home.

“Are you dating anybody, btw?” He asked as he was driving.

“Nope, I don’t think about relationships as much,” I replied.

“Why not?” He asked.

“I don’t know, I could blame it on work, but that’s not the reason,” I replied.

“Maybe you haven’t met the right man yet,” He said.

“Maybe,” I replied.

When we got to my apartment, he asked me to unlock my phone and save his number. I smiled as I got out of his car and watched him leave. We didn’t talk for the rest of the week since I was busy at work.

The following Saturday, I called him and asked if he wanted to come over.   We spent the night watching movies and talking. At that moment, I felt like we had a shot again. With time I ended up spending all my weekends with him. We would either stay at home or go on dates.

We had gone back to the way things were when we were in college. I had honestly never been happier.

As time passed, we started sleeping at each other’s houses over the weekends.  At the end of every month, we would do a game night with Tina and Gabriel.  We had been seeing each other for 3 months, and I was happy.

Since we were the hosts, I always took the initiative to go and buy everything needed in terms of food. However, due to my tight working schedule, I would end up doing the shopping on Saturday morning. Marcus would always come by in the evening with Gabriel. Tina was always late, so she would come on her own.

When it got to Saturday, I prepared a list of everything I needed. I bumped into Marcus at the gate’s entrance when I left the house.

“Babe, how comes you’re here in the morning?” I asked surprisingly.

“I just thought I would help today,” He replied with a smile.

“Aww, thank you,” I said as I gave him a peck on the cheek.

“You’re welcome,” He said.

I called an Uber and went to the store.

A few hours later, I got back home. I was in a hurry to get to the house so we could start cooking. When I opened the door, I found Marcus naked with another girl on the sofa. He was asleep, and the girl was watching Tv.

“What exactly is going on here?” I asked.

“Babe, she’s here,” She said, shaking Marcus.

I stood by the door in shock, trying to wrap my head around what was happening. Marcus was having sex in my house, on my couch?

“Marcus, what is this?” I asked.

“This is exactly how I felt five years ago,” He replied.

“Hi, Cindy, ” The girl greeted me.

“You know who I am?” I asked.

“Yeah, you’re the lady that broke his heart. I’m just glad I was able to help him heal,” She replied.

“Wait, this was a whole plan?” I asked in a confused tone.

“Yeah, I told Marcus the only way he was ever going to get over you is if you felt the same pain,” She replied.

“You told your boyfriend to date his ex so later he can come and sleep with you at her place?” I asked.

“Now we’re even,” Marcus said.

“I don’t know who is more stupid between the two of you. Get out of my house!” I said to both of them.

They gathered their things and went into the bathroom to change. A few minutes later, they came out and left.

I didn’t know what to feel. I was mad that a grown-up would plan a revenge scheme after five years. Although, I knew I deserved it. He was good to me, but I didn’t appreciate him.

Tina and Gabriel came over a while later, and I explained what had happened. Gabriel was shocked that his friend would go to such lengths to get revenge. Tina was laughing because she couldn’t believe that Marcus was dating a girl who would give him such advice. I also laughed because she was so confident telling me that she told her man to date me for revenge. We played monopoly the rest of the night, and I didn’t think about what had happened.

The following day, Gabriel offered to come to pick up Marcus’s stuff. He apologized on behalf of his friend, and honestly, he didn’t have to. I was still upset about what happened, mainly because it happened in my house. It was also hard to believe that everything we had gone through for months with Marcus meant nothing to him. However, I knew that I would heal eventually, and this would end up being a funny story.
