Hair gel is a necessity if you want to create a sleek hairstyle or revitalize an old hairstyle. Depending on the gel, a hairstyle can go for days without becoming undone. Additionally, there are a variety of great hairstyles that are quick and easy to do using gel. One of the most popular styles is laying your edges which you can do on natural, relaxed, plaited hair or wigs. The only requirement is that you know how to apply the gel correctly so that it looks good and stays in place.  If you need some guidance, here are a few tips to help you.

Know The Style You Want

Before applying gel to your hair, know the style you want. This is because different hairstyles require different types and amounts of gel. They also require different techniques for applying the gel.  For instance, if you’re braiding your hair, the most preferable gel to use is a holding gel for a smoother look. Therefore, if you use the wrong product or the wrong technique, it will ruin your hairstyle. 6 Sleek Hairstyles For Short Hair

Invest In A Good Gel

Speaking of products, not all gels and made equal so it’s necessary to invest in a good hair gel to get good results. Most hairstylists swear by Eco Styling Gel especially for laying edges. It’s light, quick-drying and it stays in place the whole day. Additionally, a little goes a long way which means it’s pocket-friendly. However, experts caution that it can get flaky if used incorrectly.

Wash And Condition Your Hair

The general rule of thumb is before you add any product to your hair, you should make sure you start clean. This is especially necessary when applying gel since there should be minimal dirt and oil buildup for the gel to hold. Start by washing and conditioning your hair then let it dry a little and apply the product. Though you can apply gel to both dry and wet hair, it tends to work better on wet hair. if you have second-day hair, simply spritz some water on it and apply the gel. Apply The Gel To Your Hair

Many people make the mistake of applying hair gel to the comb and then transferring it to their hair. This not only wastes a lot of product but also you will not get the results you want. You should first apply the gel directly to your hair using your fingers then use a comb to distribute it throughout your hair. Make sure you cover your entire head. If you need to add more, continue applying with your fingers then distribute with a comb.

Use A Fine Tooth Comb

Flyaways can be quite frustrating when you’re trying to create a sleek look. However, the right comb can take all your frustrations away. To begin, never use an ordinary comb. This only creates unwanted frizz. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. Then, get your old toothbrush and sleek down any loose hair.

Use Your Fingers To Form Curls Or Spikes

For curly natural hair or wavy textured hair, bringing out those curls is a big deal. However, at times, the hair is simply not cooperating for one reason or another. In this situation, apply the gel then use your fingers to curl your hair the way you want then leave it to dry.

Follow Your Natural Hairline

We all want to have sleek baby hairs that are well defined. Unfortunately, we’re not all blessed with baby hair but that doesn’t mean that you can’t lay your edges. To avoid looking messy, ensure that you follow your natural hairline. You’ll find that when you use this technique, your edges come out looking better. Don’t forget to wrap your hair to set it. 7 Ways To Avoid Losing Your Hairline

Scrunch Out The Crunch

Using too much hair gel will leave you with a hard crust once it dries. Don’t panic, though. You can still save your hairstyle without having to start over again. If you use too much product on accident, simply apply a small amount of oil and scrunch out your hair until the hard crust is gone.

Blow Dry To Hold Your Hair

After styling, it can take some time for the gel to dry and hold your hair. To speed up the process, you can use a blow dryer to dry your hair and hold into place. To also ensures that your style stays all day long without moving. Hold the blow dryer at a distance so the pressure doesn’t affect your hair style.
