When he opened the door and saw his sister standing on the other side, he knew something terrible had happened. He let her in without saying a word to her and fixed her a cup of tea to calm her down. She sipped the soothing chamomile tea silently as she stared at the ground.
“Someone stole Mum’s ring.” She finally said putting down the teacup.
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t find it. I put it in my office drawer so that I wouldn’t lose it when we went I went for fieldwork and when I came back, it wasn’t there.”
“Don’t worry. We’ll find it. Are there CCTV cameras in the office?”
“Yes. We’ve already checked. You can’t see anything.”
“Okay. We’ll still get it. That’s one of the last memories we have of Mum. It means too much to let it go like that.”
The ring was their mother’s wedding ring which she gave to Vincent’s sister before passing on. She died when the two were just teenagers and they’ve cherished everything that reminded them of her including the ring. So, losing it was a big blow to both of them.
They both drove to her office to look whether someone saw something. The atmosphere at the office was tense as three policemen walked around questioning everyone. That was when Vincent met Flora, one of the police officers investigating the theft of the ring. Though he was focused on finding his mother’s ring, he couldn’t help noticing her beauty. She was unlike any police officer he had ever met and if it wasn’t for the uniform, he would have assumed she was an employee at his sister’s office.
He watched her move from desk to desk with a notepad and pen in hand. Every time she stood up, everyone turned to look at her. Once she was done questioning everyone, Vincent approached her and introduced himself.
“Morning.” He said.
“Morning.” She stretched her hand out for a handshake.
“How’s the investigation.”
“So far, we are right where we started but we’re doing all we can to find the missing ring. May I ask who you are.”
“I’m Vincent, Samantha’s brother.”
“Oh, nice to meet you and I’m so sorry for this incident. I know it’s not easy losing something that belongs to a late parent.”
“Thank you.”
He was surprised by how empathic she was. Normally, he met police officers who were rude and bossy but she was soft and sweet which made a big impression on Vincent.
“Well, here’s my card if anything comes up. I’m just a phone call away.” She said.
He watched her walk away then went to his sister’s desk.
“You look smitten, bro.” she joked and her colleagues laughed along.
“No, no. I’m fine.” He said. “I’m going to the office. Call me if anything comes up.”
He got to the office and settled in for the day but he couldn’t stop thinking about Flora. Something inside of him wanted to ask her out and he almost did before he was interrupted by one of his workmates.
“Hey, G.”
“Hey, what’s up?”
“You seem distracted. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. My mother’s ring got stolen so I’ve been dealing with that the whole morning.”
“Sorry to hear that.”
“Bro, let me ask you a question, have you ever dated a police officer?”
He laughed. “You already have a crush on the officer?”
“No, just asking.”
“Well, no I haven’t but it can’t be that bad. Nowadays I see some really pretty policewomen.”
“Yea, but it’s not just that. Flora is an angel. I think I genuinely like her.”
“Wow, okay. This will be interesting.”
A week had passed before he heard anything about his mother’s ring so he decided to give Flora a call. The first ring went unanswered so he tried again. It also went unanswered. Just when he was about to give up, she answered the phone.
“Hello.”
Hey Flora, It’s Vincent.”
“Oh hi… Long time. I thought you gave up on the case.”
“Not at all. I was waiting for your update.”
“Well, we’re hitting a lot of dead ends but I won’t give up.”
“Thank you. It’s good to know that. We can meet for lunch and discuss the progress.” He requested.
“Of course. When are you free?”
“What about today?”
“Okay.”
Flora showed up dressed in a baby pink fitted dress and a pair of silver heels. She almost looked unrecognizable without her uniform which left Vincent more smitten than ever before. He was now sure that Flora was the one and that he had to make a move on her. He stood up as she approached him and welcomed her to sit.
“You look incredible.”
“Thank you.”
“Now I’m confused. I came to get an update on the ring but I think we’ll have to do that another day.”
“We can still talk about the ring.” She joked.
“No, let’s get to know each other first. I barely know anything about you other than you’re very beautiful and sweet.”
“What else do you want to know?”
“Everything.”
They talked for hours and hours until darkness fell. Vincent offered to drop her at her home which she agreed. He ended up going in for a cup of tea and to talk some more.
“I really enjoyed your company. It’s been long since I had this much fun.” He said.
“I enjoyed your company as well.”
“Do you mind if we saw each other more often? Maybe even daily.”
There was a long, awkward pause as he waited for her to respond. She seemed shocked by the proposal but was still considering it.
“I’d love that.” She replied. “But I’m still handling your case which would be unprofessional.”
“Wow, you want to make me wait?”
“Not really. How about I make you a promise? When we find your mother’s ring then I’ll go on as many dates as you want.”
“Fine. Whatever you want.”
Knowing how much time it would take for the police to find the ring, Vincent hired a private investigator to hasten the process. He also wanted Flora’s attention which would be impossible if she was working on the case full time.
The private investigator immediately made a discovery that would help him track the ring. Eventually, he found the ring and Vincent was more than happy to let Flora know that the case was solved.
“I guess I’m all yours now.”
“Yes, you are.”
Their relationship blossomed right in front of everyone’s eyes but it still took many by surprise when Vincent announced that they were getting married. He threw a lavish party where he went down on one knee, pulled out his mother’s ring, and asked Flora to be his wife. There were many gasps as their relationship had moved faster than most but there was another reason why Vincent had rushed to propose to her. She was expecting his child.
The wedding ceremony followed a few months after the engagement and was graced by Flora’s colleagues in the police force including some of the officers who had worked on the stolen ring case. Everyone was happy to see how things transpired. Some were even moved to tears as the two lovebirds exchanged their vows and Vincent showered Flora with praises. Just like that, Vincent and Flora got their happily ever after.
