It’s well known that men have the luxury of time when it comes to their reproductive health. However, just like women, men can experience low hormone levels as they age. The condition is known as andropause and it’s caused by low testosterone levels. This normally happens when a man reaches 30 years old. Their testosterone production begins to slowly drop and by the time they’re 70 years old, they’ll have half the testosterone levels they had when they were 20 years old. Andropause can be reversed using treatment. Therefore, it’s necessary to be aware of the signs so you can address the issue when it happens. Here are some signs to look out for.

Lower Sexual Activity

It’s natural that the older you get the less interest you have in sexual activity. You definitely won’t have as much sex in your 50s as you did in your 20s. However, if you experience extreme loss of sex drive, this could be a result of andropause. Many men complain of sex-related issues such as erectile dysfunction and infertility. Testosterone is the primary sex hormone and anabolic steroid in males. Therefore, it plays a key role in promoting a healthy sex life and a decline in this hormone will have a negative effect on sexual activity. Depression

WHO classified depression as the leading cause of disability in the world affecting more than 280 million people. Additionally, over 700,000 people die by suicide due to depression. There are many causes of depression including low testosterone levels in men.

Testosterone helps regulate your mood. Therefore, you might become depressed when you have lower levels of the hormone. Some of the common symptoms of depression include persistent sadness, low energy, anxiety, irritability, low concentration levels, or anger. If you experience such symptoms, make sure you see a therapist and possibly seek treatment for andropause. 7 Daily Habits For Managing Depression

Increased Body Weight

It’s no secret that weight gain comes with age. In fact, you’ll start noticing that your body isn’t the way it used to be as early as your 30s. This is because your metabolism slows down and your body doesn’t burn as much fat as it used to. However, some male weight gain can be a clue to possible andropause. If all of the extra weight appear around the belly area, then it may be time to have your hormone levels checked out.

Loss Of Muscle Mass And Bone Density

When young boys are coming of age, testosterone helps them develop muscle mass and bone density. During this time, they experience growth spats and their bodies become more defined. As they get older and testosterone levels decrease, it becomes harder to sustain muscle mass and they become more susceptible to weakness, chronic fatigue, and bone-related illnesses such as arthritis. To retain muscle mass and bone density, it’s important to address hormonal changes through treatment.

Loss Of Hair

Many men experience hair loss as they age for a variety of reasons. Some hair loss can be a result of andropause since testosterone is vital in promoting hair growth. As opposed to genetics, hair loss caused by andropause usually happens in patches. Men will start losing hair in certain patterns making their hair look patchy as opposed to normal baldness. 6 Myths About Balding And Hairloss

Insomnia

Insomnia can be easily brushed off as an age-related issue. Many people in their older years usually sleep for fewer hours. However, it can also be a sign of andropause since testosterone plays a key role in regulating sleep patterns. If it declines, you might find it difficult to fall asleep. Insomnia can lead to other symptoms such as irritability, daytime drowsiness, anxiety, and lack of focus. 4 Common Insomnia Causes – How To Prevent Them
