The Safaricom Youth Orchestra graduation 2022 was such a fun time that it would be easy to forget that the graduates would be leaving this orchestra that they had dedicated so many Saturdays to. One graduate had been there since the beginning and I could only imagine how hard it was for her to leave her musical family behind. She had come in as a young girl and she was leaving as an adult.
This was the first graduation of the Safaricom Youth Orchestra since the pandemic and it is like they wanted to make up for it. Guests were treated to 2 hours of great music, moving from the past into the present and with some James Bond medley and African medleys (folk fusion). So we went from classical pieces to folk fusion thrown in. The SYO will perform classical pieces, a James Bond medley from the movies, and a special performance of folk fusion.
This 8th Safaricom Youth Orchestra graduation ceremony was held at the Jain Bhavan Centre in Loresho on Sunday 3rd April 2022. 18 graduates have been certificated in orchestral music. They have learnt to play various instruments from the trumpet to the alto sax, the flute and the violin.
“With an orchestra, you are building citizens, better citizens for the community.”
Gustavo Dudamel
“I am pleased to be here today as we yet again celebrate our #SafaricomYouthOrchestra graduates. I remember last year the joy and emotions that this celebration stirred, even though we were holding the ceremony virtually.” – Joe Ogutu, Chief Special Projects.
Here are some highlights from the graduation.
All the performances at the #SafaricomYouthOrchestra were fantastic. My favourite was the Kenyan mix at the end which was just dope. They had a guest drummer & there was a student who turned his violin into a nyatiti. @DuncanWambugu has the best job. @SafaricomPLC ???? pic.twitter.com/5MGjkMoGC0
