Love is sweet, but love with money? Well, sweeter. Much much sweeter. Fortunately or unfortunately for Lizzie, money didn’t mean much. In fact, she liked it when she paid for her own things, and especially things that she considered self-care. That’s why she was a little agitated when her boyfriend Ezra said that he was going to meet her at the nail parlour.
She tried to hesitate but he insisted.
“I’m in town, I have nowhere else to sit and wait for you,” he said, and she felt sorry for him.
You see, Lizzie knew that if her boyfriend landed there he would have insisted to pay the bill. He had done it before, and she didn’t like it. It was the way the rest of the nail technicians looked at one another when he removed his wallet. Lizzie could tell that as she walked out of that door the gossip would begin. Her nail parlour could see the sudden worry in her eyes.
Unfortunately for Lizzie, Ezra walked in as she was paying the bill, and just as she had predicted, he offered to pay.
“No, no, no. We’re not discussing this. I’m paying for it in full,” he said.
He took out his phone and quickly found out how to pay using his phone, and paid. Lizzie was left rolling her eyes in the back.
Once the two were done they headed out for late lunch as they waited for their friends so that they could begin the night.
After a while, Ezra’s friends arrived. They talked and after a lot of discussions, they settled on a certain bar for pregame, and then they would head out for drinks.
One after the other, the squad started to drink. They started with beers and soon went into drinking a bottle of gin. It was a good night, with good music and even greater vibes. It was all perfect until it wasn’t.
Ezra pulled out Lizzie’s hands and started to caress her. That’s when he saw her nails and remembered.
“They’re so beautiful,” he said.
Lizzie blushed and thanked him. One thing about her boyfriend, he always gave her compliments. It didn’t matter where they were, or who they were with.
“Silas! Silas!” Ezra called out to his best friend.
“Look at her nails, they’re so beautiful!” He said.
Silas laughed and said nothing. He was a quiet person so this was not shocking. But Ezra didn’t stop there…
“I paid for them,” he said. There was an awkward silence, and then he repeated himself.
“Silas, I paid for these nails,” Ezra said again.
Lizzie was as embarrassed as can be. Why on earth would he do that? Was he paying for her nails so that he could show people that he was capable? She stood up and walked toward the bathroom trying to comprehend what had happened. She took a deep breath and then walked back to the table, acting as though nothing had happened.
When she got to the table she could feel the stares at her. Everyone was wondering why she had stormed off and looking out for her next reaction. But she played it down, acting as though everything was fine. She made a joke, everyone laughed and everything went back to normal.
“Why would you do that, Ezra?” she asked him the next day.
“You can’t blame me for what I do when I’m drunk. The answer is right there, I was drunk.” Ezra said.
Lizzie sat there wondering what had happened to be accountable for one’s actions.
She was so upset that she didn’t want to talk to him at all. She was furious that he had embarrassed her in front of their friends and it was not like she had told him to pay for her nails. She sat with it for a day, and then once she had gotten over it she called Ezra, and all was forgiven. But she vowed she would never let him pay for her nails again.
