Addiction is on the rise as people turn to alcohol and other substances to manage the pressures of life. Despite being quite common nowadays, many people still don’t understand how to deal with an addict which has led to family disputes and friendship breakups. Dealing with an addict can be mentally and physically challenging. However, it’s necessary to offer a helping hand to such individuals in order to accelerate their recovery process. There’s no formula in helping someone struggling with addiction but you can try some of these tips to offer them support.

  1. Manage Your Expectations

As mentioned, it’s hard for people to understand how addiction is if they’ve never been in that kind of situation. Therefore, they may have unrealistic expectations of how to deal with an addict. Remember that most addicts are not able to keep their promise. They may assure you that they will change their ways then go back to substance abuse. Try not to give up on them and encourage them to seek treatment no matter how many times they relapse.

  1. Lead By Example

One of the best ways to help someone struggling with addiction is to show them better ways of coping with stress. You can introduce them to fun recreational activities that will put them in a better mental state. It could be something as simple as going for a morning walk, cooking, or meditating. Doing this regularly can take their minds off substances and help them recover from addiction.

  1. Establish Trust

You can’t be able to help someone who doesn’t trust you. Therefore, it’s necessary to establish a trusting relationship with an addict before helping them in their recovery process. This will make it easier for them to listen to what you say since it won’t come off as criticism or judgment. In order to establish trust between you and a loved one struggling with addiction, try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

  1. Set Boundaries

Addicts often lack structure in their life and may try to push you in order to test your limits. Setting clear boundaries lets the person which behaviours are acceptable. This can help discourage substance use without being forceful. It also helps you manage your expectations and avoid feeling frustrated by their behaviour. Most importantly, it protects your well-being as well as your loved one’s wellbeing.

  1. Celebrate Progress

Recovery is a slow process and it can take years. Therefore, celebrating the small wins can serve as a motivation to reach the end goal. Whether they’ve been sober for one week or have agreed to go to a rehab facility, making such moments memorable will let them know that they’re on the right track. Be sure to celebrate them and let them know that they’ve accomplished something. How To Overcome Addiction

  1. Continue The Support

Don’t stop supporting them whether they start making progress towards their recovery or not. Your support may be the reason why they’ve managed to stay sober so ensure that you’re consistent with it. Additionally, if they relapse, continue to encourage them to seek sobriety. This is when they need your support the most. Try to be there for them through any step they make. 1. Take Care Of Yourself

It’s an age-old saying that never gets old – you can’t pour from an empty cup. Dealing with someone struggling with addiction will take a toll on you. Therefore, you need to remember to take care of yourself as well. If you feel mentally drained, try talking to someone or have a self-care routine.

  1. Learn About Treatment Options

There are a number of treatment options available for someone struggling with addiction. Try to do your research and find out which one suits your loved one. for some people, rehab doesn’t work. Such people can seek other options such as counselling or group therapy. You can also contact a professional to help you make a decision. 4 Signs It’s Time To Seek Addiction Treatment
