Like the hair on your head, the beard too can get itchy. Your beard may itch if your skin is dry, if you have acne, when you use facial products that irritate your skin, or when you have ingrown hairs.

Other contributing factors include poor hygiene, a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, or even a bacterial infection.

Even though a common problem, there are ways to get rid of this issue. Some of the techniques you can incorporate into your routine to prevent beard itch include

  1. Cleansing

A way to maintain good personal hygiene which also prevents beard itch is by cleansing your beard the right way. That includes using natural cleansers that don’t contain irritants and following up with conditioners and oil of choice.

Since on average a beard takes comparatively more time and effort to groom than the hair on your head, it’s only right that you consider using specialised products.

Once or twice a week is the ideal number of times you should cleanse your beard. Washing it too often could strip the hairs of their natural oils, thus leading to dry skin and itching.

   2. Moisturise your beard often

Moisturing your beard is crucial if you want to get rid of beard itch. This implies that aside from using a good conditioner which helps keep the beard soft, good beard oil is needed to keep your strands healthy and supple. Good beard oil will soften the beard, keep the beard itch at bay and nourish the strands, curbing breakage.

Some of the oils you can use on your beard include; argan oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil or olive oil.

   3. Brush your beard

Using the right beard comb or brush prevents your beard from itching because brushing distributes the oil throughout your beard. The brush detangles the hair, preventing ingrown hairs and giving your beard a smooth texture, A good comb plus the right.

   4. Trim the hairs

Cleansing your beard gets rid of the dirt and build-up but trimming keeps your beard neat and itch-free. Use clippers with adjustable settings to trim your beard since they allow you to trim the beard to any length and shape you’d prefer. Trimming is not only essential if you want to prevent flyaways and split ends, but it prevents dryness which curbs itchiness.

At this stage, you can also take care of the ingrown hairs if you happen to have any. Use tweezers to pluck them out gently and incorporate an exfoliating scrub in your cleansing routine, to keep pores unclogged.

A few pointers to keep in mind

  • Use warm water instead of hot. Hot water strips you of moisture leading to dryness and itchiness.
  • Use clean products or any product that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals, when cleansing your face.
  • Allow the hair to grow beyond the hair follicles before shaving or trimming. This will prevent follicle damage, irritation and itchiness.
  • In case you have an underlying skin condition, consult a professional on the right treatment as this will address the concern.
