Potatoes wouldn’t ordinarily be anyone’s number one go-to for any facial care. Before I knew about the benefits, I would have thought it absurd to use potatoes on your face. But that was all before I realized in my kitchen lies the most unexpected answer to most of my skin problems. As I walked around the house back home completely smeared with mashed potatoes my mum thought I must have had some loose bolts but I laughed and told her it’s good for the skin. She saw the results on my skin even before I did and just like that we were a family that smeared mashed potatoes and used potato juice as a facial cleanser. Potatoes, despite their unlikely nature, are re-known for their versatility when it comes to food preparation. Not only are these raw products for fries, crisps, and many more foods but also, they are a natural cosmetic product they act as skin lighteners, toners and even as eye creams. How so, you may ask, well here’s how.

  1. Skin Toning

Potatoes can be used as natural toners and lighten the skin without any chemical damage. They work to take away any discolouration and balance the skin tone evenly. It naturally lightens and brightens the skin. Slice up a potato thinly and rub all over the face till it’s slightly dark then throw it away, run ice cubes all over your face and rinse. For better results use it with lemons. 6 Benefits Of Using A Toner In Your Skincare Routine

  1. Remove blemishes.

The vitamin C in potatoes is great for removing blemishes, old acne scars, and any unevenness. It reduces the appearance of scars on the skin. Grate the potato finely and apply this all over your face. Let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Do this regularly for better results. Lifestyle: The Health Benefits Of Vitamin C, Food Sources

  1. Treat sunburns.

This is a natural remedy for treating sunburns. Apply cold potato juice on the affected area or slice up a potato and place it directly on the area. It creates a soothing and cooling sensation after application and reduces the burning effect on the skin. Skincare: The Benefits Of Sunscreen And How To Apply It Properly

  1. Prevents wrinkles.

Potato juice contains vitamin A, B, and C which rejuvenate the skin with constant use. Apply cold potato juice on your face and massage it in. rinse this off after 15 minutes with warm water. The nutrients plus its antioxidant properties tighten, restore and hydrate the skin. The skin is made firm and with constant use, it removes wrinkles, fine lines, and smile lines as well.

  1. Remove dark circles and reduce eye puffiness.

The eye area is one of the most sensitive and sometimes dark circles and puffiness may appear due to exhaustion, lack of sleep or even the products we use. I’m an insomniac and on some nights I barely get any sleep hence waking up with puffy eyes. One method is using a teabag to reduce this but potatoes also do the trick. This natural starch does this because of its antioxidant properties and the presence of vitamin C. These properties promote circulation within the area hence reducing the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. Do this by cutting up thin slices of the potato and directly placing them under the eye area. Beauty: How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles Under The Eyes

So now you know there’s not only more ways to cook potatoes but also more ways to use them. Give it a shot and thank nature for this heaven-sent root tuber. Also, check out this post 17 Ways To Use Potato As A Beauty Product for many other potato beauty hacks.
