Are you intrigued by the unknown and the mysterious? Do you love exploring abandoned places and uncovering secrets of the past? If so, you’re in for a treat! There are many strange and eerie places all over the world that will give you goosebumps and leave you feeling both thrilled and unnerved. In this article, we’ll take you on a journey to some of the most peculiar and unsettling places on the planet. So, get ready to explore the dark side of tourism and discover some of the world’s most enigmatic destinations.

1. Aokigahara Forest, Japan

Also known as the Suicide Forest, this forest in Japan has the morbid reputation of being one of the best places to die. It is a dense forest with a silence so strange, it exudes a peculiar sensation of unfathomable solitude. For years people who wandered the forest never had the intention of going back with some going as far as committing suicide. The forest has a way of drawing you in, further and further. Making it even more spooky, bodies lay in it for years, undiscovered, haunting new visitors even more. Now, the locals have added signposts leading into it encouraging people to seek help and not commit suicide, going so far as to share the contacts of local authorities to call for assistance.

2. La Isla de la Munecas (Island of Dolls), Mexico

The Island of Dolls is a man-made Island in Mexico City and though it has dolls in its name, it is no place for children. This is a place that will scare the piss out of grown men. The island has countless disfigured dolls hanging on trees. Most of them have missing body parts. Some are just limbs, or legs or a head with or without hair. Some have no eyes so all you see are holes with occasional insects climbing out of them. Time and the weather have worn them out so that what’s left is terrifying, disturbing, and haunting.

It wasn’t designed to be scary. Legend has it that a local man found the dead body of a young girl and hung the first doll to ward off evil spirits, appease the spirit of the dead girl and honour her. Over time, Don Julian, the man became increasingly obsessed with the dolls and began collecting more and more, even trading vegetables he grew on the island for dolls. It is a unique, real-life horror experience as their dead eyes stare back at you as you go silently by. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

3. Poveglia Island, Italy

This is considered one of the most haunted places in the world. During the middle ages, the island was used as a quarantine location for people with Bubonic plague. Later it was used as a mental hospital with doctors performing horrific experiments on patients. Both times it led to the death of thousands of people which is why it comes as no surprise that people believe the island is cursed and that the soil is made up of the ashes of the victims who were burned in mass graves. Presently, the Island is uninhabited. People say that it is not unusual for the crashing waves to carry bones and skulls or for your boat to get stuck on human bones. An array of paranormal activities have also been reported on the island.

4. Lome Bazaar, Togo

Lome Bazaar in Togo boasts the world’s largest voodoo market. The people who come here are looking to get all the necessary commodities to practice black magic. The offerings include everything from powdered chameleon, leopard heads and dog skulls to all manner of animal skulls and skeletons. If you can stomach walking through a market with carcasses everywhere, an elephant leg here, bats hanging there and cobra skins everywhere while surrounded by people who proclaim their practice of the dark arts, more power to you.

5. Mapimi Silent Zone, Mexico

Mapimi Silent Zone is a deeply unsettling place in Mexico where no radio signals can be sent or received. It is believed that radio waves and other signals cannot be transmitted due to magnetic fields and/or alien energy. In July 1970, attest missile belonging to the US government crashed into the Mapimi Desert region and a NASA rocket engineer was sent to investigate. His report is still sealed from the public. Even further fueling the mystery and rumours, it is reported that a local man was hired to guard the crash debris. People also claim to have noticed big people who all of a sudden disappear. The Mapimi Silent Zone is located between two parallels and has similarities with the Bermuda Triangle.
