You’re underutilizing your bar soap. Hear me out, bar soap can be so much more than just a cleaning agent. Here are all the surprising things you could be doing with it.

Fix stuck things and hinges

Are your sippers stuck? Rub the bar of soap along the zipper then try zipping and unzipping it. The soap lubricates the zipper, making it easier for it to move.

You can also fix sticky drawers and sliding doors that won’t open smoothly by rubbing soap on the edges.

If you’re dealing with a stiff lock, drag the key over a bar of soap, coat it then try to unlock the lock. It should be easier to open.

Rub a bar of soap on the edges of squeaky door hinges and floorboards to stop the squeaks. Test the squeak and reapply as needed.

Freshen up and get rid of smells

Wrap a bar of soap in a bit of fabric then store it in a pair of smelly shoes or in your closet and dresser drawers, in your suitcase and car interiors and boat if you have one to freshen them up. Select a scent you like and go to town.

Bug repellent

Mix soap flakes with water in a spray bottle to make homemade bug repellent.

Sewing aid

Use a bar of soap in lieu of chalk to map outlines on fabric when sewing. Soap washes out far easier than chalk. Another sewing hack is to wrap a bar of soap with a cloth and then use it as a pin cushion. You can also use it to make marks on wood as a cutting guide if you’re the woodworking sort. For woodworkers, you can also rub the blade of saw with soap to make sawing wood easier.

Prevent paint splatters

The most common way to protect surfaces from splatter when painting is taping off surfaces. Try using a bar of soap next time, it is far easier and faster than taping off surfaces. For example, when painting near a glass pane or mirror, run the bar of soap on the glass surface. If any paint gets on it, you can easily remove it by washing it off.

Prevent foggy mirrors and glasses

Who doesn’t hate foggy mirrors? Make sure the mirror is fully dry then rub a bar of soap all over the glass. The next time you take a shower there will be no fog. This trick works on eyeglasses and sunglasses too.

Identify leaks

If you can’t spot where a tire or kiddie pool or even gas pipe is leaking, dampen a bar of soap and rub it over the suspicious areas. If the soap film bubbles, that means air is escaping and you’ve found your leak.

Protect your furniture from pets

Every pet owner knows the unique pain that is being unable to stop your pets from scratching and ruining the corners of your furniture. Pets hate the taste of soap, so coat your furniture legs and their favourite areas to scratch with a bar of soap.

Make messy hands easier to clean

If you’re the gardening or oil repair type, dig your fingernails into a bar of soap before you get started to prevent soil and grease from getting under your nails.
