It is no secret that Kenyans love to have a good time. For some of us, a good time means hitting the club with your friends and indulging in food and drink, specifically, alcoholic drinks. So you have a great time, dance and drink to the fullest. However, at the end of the day, you must find a way to safely get yourself home.

We are often advised not to ingest alcohol on an empty stomach. Alcohol is absorbed directly into your bloodstream through the stomach and intestine walls. Basically, the food acts as a buffer to reduce how fast the alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream thus slowing down the process of getting drunk.

Another drinking tip is to drink lots of water as you ingest the alcohol. The more water you drink, the less likely you are to experience alcohol-related dehydration. This way, you can also reduce how fast you get drunk and reduce chances of getting a hangover the next day.

At the end of the day, ensure that you do not drive yourself home under the influence of alcohol since you are putting yourself and others at risk. It is also advised not to use public means of transport when you are drunk. One can easily get robbed or even attacked when in such condition. So it is better if you use other safer means of transport like taxies.

Utado, which is a partnership between East African Breweries Limited and Little Cabs is a campaign that aims to promote a responsible drinking culture in Kenya. Utado is a Swahili word which translates to ‘What are you going to do?’. The slogan is simply asking you what you are going to do when you find yourself drunk in the club and need to get home safely. It advocates for three options for responsible drinking; munch food, sip water and vutia taxi.

So if you are out after a long night of drinking, ensure you have the Little Cabs application on your phone. Simply request for a Little Cab and a driver will pick you up in a very short time and drive you to your destination. There is the option of estimating your fare from the pickup spot to the drop-off spot so you can know how much you will spend on the ride home. Payment can be made using cash, MPESA, debit cards, credit cards and bank transfer. If you pay with cash and the driver does not have change, they will add under credit to your account under Little Coins.

For safety purposes especially during the night, if you feel unsafe in any way during your ride, you can turn on the panic button on the app. Additionally, if you are out with your ladies you can ensure you get a female driver using the Ladybug option from 6 pm- 8 am just to be safe. Male drivers can also access the Ladybug service from 8am-6pm.

So If you are all set to go drinking with your friends, remember Utado?

The power of the written word fascinates me. It abides- cannot be forgotten. I write in the hopes that I can document the stories of everyone I meet and everything that I see.
