Surgery is a common treatment option nowadays for a lot of procedures to enhance physical beauty. However, some of these surgeries aren’t recommended. Many surgeries are for cosmetic purposes, like trying to change your eye colour while others are for medical purposes, like orthopaedic surgery. When non-surgical options are available, many patients opt for surgery hoping for faster healing. This may not always be the case. And in fact, there are surgeries you shouldn’t have at all.

1. Eye colour surgery

If you can change your appearance on any other part of your body, why not the eyes? Some people want to change their eye colour by having a chemical dye lasered into the iris. They also want a silicone iris surgically inserted into the iris. The problem with this is the increased risk of glaucoma, cataracts, vision loss, blindness, and light sensitivity.

Known as keratopigmentation, the lasered dye procedure was popularised by a New York ophthalmologist. Iris implants are known as BrightOcular and are considered more dangerous than laser dyeing the eye. It can also lead to:

  • iris atrophy-when the pupil gets displaced
  • ectopia uvea- when the iris pigment bleeds into the membrane and can lead to glaucoma (blindness)
  • anterior chamber haemorrhage-collection of blood in the front chamber of the eye
  • corneal decompensation-this is when the clear outer front layer of the eye becomes opaque

If you want to change the colours of your eye, use medically approved coloured contact lenses. Eye surgery should only be used to correct vision or to treat injuries. Don’t use surgery for cosmetic reasons on the eye. Health: Considerations Before Getting LASIK Eye Surgery

2. Spinal fusion

This is a surgery used to deal with back pain. A spinal fusion is done by permanently fusing two or more vertebrae with metal implants or bone from elsewhere in the body. It is primarily used to treat broken spinal bones and severe spinal conditions such as scoliosis. However, some patients opt for spinal fusion surgery to treat back pain because they believe it will get rid of it instantly.

Non-surgical options require long commitments and don’t guarantee any pain-free existence. As a result, spinal fusion surgery is a common option for physical workers who need their backs to work. However, it can lead to complications like infections, blood clots, nerve damage, and heart failure. If you want to deal with back pain, low-impact exercises, painkillers, and topical treatments are more effective. Effective Non-Medical Solutions For Back Pain

3. Hysterectomy

This is the surgical removal of the uterus and part of the cervix. Some conditions do require a patient to consider a hysterectomy. These conditions include endometriosis, fibroids, uterine cancer, uterine and pelvic organ prolapse, and abnormal uterine bleeding. A hysterectomy can save a life and improve the quality of life for some patients.

An elective hysterectomy can present certain problems that ruin the quality of life. Getting a hysterectomy because you want to remain child-free can lead to serious consequences and menopausal symptoms. These include vaginal dryness, mood swings, difficulty achieving orgasm, intestinal changes, and depression. If you want to remain child-free, you can opt for options like tubal ligation, or the pill. In addition, a hysterectomy should be a last resort for major conditions. Ensure you get multiple opinions from doctors before settling for an elective hysterectomy.

4. Brazilian butt lift (BBL)

The BBL is considered the deadliest cosmetic surgery procedure. It’s a surgery to help with fuller, rounder buttocks. The BBL involves removing fat from other parts of the body and grafting it into the butt. It is popular because it doesn’t use implants. It’s estimated that every one in 3000 procedures results in a death. This is because of the high likelihood of a fat embolism when fat ends up in the blood vessels leading to fat deposits in the lungs. This leads to a pulmonary embolism.

There are safer ways to get killer glutes such as squats. They are exercises that help tone the glutes, hamstrings, and quads. When paired with weight training and ab exercises, it helps get rid of belly fat which makes the waist smaller. Together with firm cheeks, this gives the popular cinched look that the BBL aims to achieve.

5. Liposuction

It’s a surgery that removes fat from the stomach, hips, thighs, and buttocks. It contours the areas that the patient wants sculpted. Liposuction is not meant to be a fat-loss surgery. It’s a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from specific regions for people who already have a low body fat percentage. It’s important to remember that lipoplasty doesn’t remove cellulite, dimples, or stretch marks.  Tips To Get Rid Of Belly Fat

Liposuction comes with many risks and complications. This includes organ damage. The fat is removed with a cannula which is a high-pressure vacuum. It sucks out the fat but can easily come into contact with other organs. During the surgery, perforations can happen on the organs which require surgery to fix. Other liposuction risks include bruising, inflammation, blood clots, poor skin elasticity, numbness, infection, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary oedema (fluid build-up in the lungs), and skin burns.

If you want to get rid of body fat content, you may need regular exercise, a balanced diet, and a healthy sleep schedule. Liposuction should only be considered if you have great skin elasticity and your lifestyle changes haven’t given you the tightness you need. But going under the knife is incredibly and needlessly risky. Frequent strength training, using a great skincare routine, and staying hydrated can help increase skin elasticity.
