On that fateful night, she remembered everything that happened like it was a day before. All the details were crystal in her mind she could see them clearly like it was a video. Maggie had not planned to be intimate with Gabriel. She had tried all she could to stay in her lane and avoid him as much as she could. However much she tried, the temptation had been overwhelming and that’s why right now, she was staring at Mini-Gabriel.
Gabriel was the fiancée to Pamela, who happened to be Maggie’s best friend at that time. They had been friends from when they were younger. On Pam’s big day, there was no way Maggie would be missing. She had to be there and not just as any other guest or maid but as the best maid.
Before the big day, things had started out innocently. Gabriel had started calling her from time to time asking about things that seemed absurd to have to ask her, as the best maid. For instance, this one time Gabriel called and asked things that he could have asked Pam.
“Hi there, Maggie!”, He said as his heavy voice roared with some form of authority.
“Hi Gabriel,” she responded without saying much. She was surprised that Gabriel would call her.
“I wanted to inquire about something that I think you’d be the right person to ask.” He said and kept quiet for a minute to hear what she’d say.
“Okay, I am listening.”
“Where do you think Pam would enjoy being taken for the honeymoon?” He asked.
This left Maggie speechless. Apart from the fact that it hit her by surprise, it had also made her wonder if he was being genuine. How come he did not know where his wife-to-be would want to spend her honeymoon, yet Pamela had been very open about it?
Pamela was the type of person who was outspoken about what she wanted in her life. She was a believer in affirmations and speaking things into happening. She was very open about what she wanted so she would let everyone know where she would have wanted to have her wedding and also her honeymoon.
She decided to play dumb and answer the obvious question after a long pause.
“I think she’d enjoy the Bahamas. That’s her dream honeymoon destination.”
The conversation had been purposely to know about Pam’s dream destination and it had then turned into Gabriel wanting to know more about Maggie. Which was very weird, considering the type of questions he had asked.
“Why did Pamela keep you hidden? I had only seen you in a picture and I can’t say it’s the same as seeing you in person.” He said with a laugh, like he trying to keep the conversation light and comfortable.
Maggie wondered where this conversation was headed. She had been friends with Pamela even before her best friend had flown to the US.
They had exchanged photos as frequently as their communication needs had allowed as friends and that’s how maybe he got to see her. But how was that relevant right now? But because she did not want to be rude in her response, she acted dumb, yet again.
“You know how it is – sometimes pictures don’t capture the real essence of somebody and when you meet that person in real life, they may look different.”. Her voice sounded so bored.
Had Gabriel been keen, he could have noted and hung up, but he did not. He wanted to continue with the weird conversation, but Maggie felt like the conversation was inappropriate, so she gave an excuse to end the call.
This one weird conversation led to pleasantries and random conversations that Maggie had not anticipated. She had thought that the first weird conversation would be it. But it was not.
Maggie had wanted to mention this development to Pamela because Gabriel was calling her frequently and the conversations were getting deeper.
She decided to call her friend to tell her about Gabriel’s constant checking on her. “Hi Pam. How are you doing?”
“I am very good. How are you?” Pamela had responded with enthusiasm as usual.
“I am good.” Maggie was trying to think about what she wanted to say. She wondered how it would all look if she mentioned their conversations to Pamela. It was two weekends down the line and the two had communicated every single day ever since he asked about Pam’s preferred honeymoon destination. What would she say if asked why she kept quiet about it all until this day? She would not have been comfortable disclosing all the details of the conversation she had had with Gabriel because it also included romantic connotations. This was not the type of conversation she should have been having with Pam’s fiancé. In the end, she chickened out and could not have the conversation she wanted to have with her best friend.
“I wanted to know how you were doing,” Maggie said instead.
“Oh. I am well, dear one. Just up and down with preparations, you know we only have two weeks. You were to come here so we go check the gowns,” Pamela reminded her.
“Yeah, I will be there at 3:00 in the afternoon.”
Just like that, she had decided to keep the whole thing a secret. She reasoned that if there was a time that she had needed to open up, it had been immediately after Gabriel had called her. Now, that boat had sailed.
One thing that she did not understand, was how she allowed for that communication to go on even when it seemed very inappropriate. She had accommodated Gabriel’s flirting with her and had even replied to his suggestive messages with the same energy.
“You know I would not mind taking you out,” his message read.
“I wouldn’t mind too if you had been single but the situation, we are in doesn’t allow that.” She had texted back within a few seconds of receiving Gabriel’s message. She had not even taken a minute to think things through. Something that left her wondering what type of a friend she was.
Pamela, her best friend was out there trying to create a life for herself but here she was, toying with an idea that could ruin everything for her best friend. Was she even a friend to Pamela or an idea of a friend? She wondered.
“As long as we keep things to ourselves,” he replied.
That seemed like something she did not mind doing. For a moment, it had appeared to her that there was something about Gabriel that pulled her to him. Something that made it almost impossible to resist his advances and messages. He liked her, and she liked him. It was very uncomfortable to think about the whole thing because how could they allow such an idea to come to fruition?
Off they went for a night out. They had gone out of town to a place where they thought no one would see them. They had drinks and long steamy and interesting conversations. They had so much in common that they never ran out of what to say as they stayed there.
That night, the influence of alcohol together with the fact that they had a liking for each other made them make what she considered to be a mistake in the morning. They ended up having sex.
In the morning, both of them regretted what had happened. Neither of them had wanted things to get to this situation but somehow it had. If Pamela found out about this, then the wedding would be cancelled for sure. They decided mutually to keep quiet about it and pretend it hadn’t happened. After all, Pam and Gabriel would go for their honeymoon after the wedding and thereafter head to the States. There would be little to no awkward moments. This had happened three days before the wedding. They kept their communication going but on the down low, but they never met again. After the wedding as per the plan, the lovebirds left for the states.
Then Maggie missing her period. Something that gave her chills. She had not been dating at the time meaning her worst fears of being expectant for her best friend’s now husband, could be confirmed.
After doing a test, her fear was confirmed. But she had decided to keep it to herself. She hid the details of the fateful night from everyone. No one knew what had happened, until when the child had been born. Nine months down the line, Maggie gave birth to Rob.
Rob was a striking image of Gabriel. Anyone who had seen Gabriel could tell that this was his child. There was no denying the truth that he was Gabriel’s son.
Three years after the wedding, Gabriel, Pamela and their daughter travelled back to Kenya to visit family and friends. Maggie had not gone to visit them, and she had tried as much as possible to keep a distance because she knew the moment they saw Rob, they would all know, and the uncomfortable truth would be out.
However, as she was shopping one day with Rob seated in the trolley, she bumped into Pam and Gabriel at the mall. After a few pleasantries, Pam said the one thing that she had hoped she wouldn’t. All the while, Gabriel was staring at Rob in disbelief.
“Why is he the spitting image of Gabriel?” She asked with a frown.
As Pam turned to Gabriel, she noticed that he was staring at Rob deeply. Turning to Maggie, her face confirmed gave her the answer she needed to know.
“I can explain,” Maggie said as she looked at Pamela who looked like she wanted to scream and shout.
Pam was so mad she walked out of the mall without buying anything. Gabriel went after Pamela trying to explain himself. He was saying how he did not know about the baby and that he was just as surprised as her.
Maggie had been determined to keep this secret to avoid all the drama. But her son being the spitting image of Gabriel gave it away.
