The Safari Rally happened last weekend and for some of us, it was a complete nightmare. It caused me long sleepless nights even before it happened. I was already getting heartburn weeks before the event happened. My girlfriend couldn’t stop talking about it and pressuring me to take her to Naivasha. I would have taken her if I had the money, but things are tight and I couldn’t afford to waste money on enjoyment. The only problem is I was dating a party girl and she was used to having her way. She made it clear that she was going whether I took her or not.
At that time, I didn’t understand what she meant. I thought she had made plans with her group of friends. So, I didn’t take the “threats” seriously. In fact, I dared her to go.
“You think I won’t go.”
“Go if you can.”
“You’re such a loser.”
“I’m a loser now but when I had money you were calling me from morning to night.”
“I’ve been telling you that I want to go to Naivasha to see the rally for weeks. It’s a few days from the event now and you haven’t said anything.”
“I thought you made other plans.”
“I can’t believe you. I’ll go with one of your friends.”
That was the first time that she mentioned it. My friends were those infamous Subaru boys and I knew without a doubt that they were going to Naivasha that weekend. I just didn’t know whether she was serious about going with them. When she first mentioned it, I thought it was the usual empty threats she had been making for weeks. However, she kept mentioning it several times which made me take it seriously.
“Have you asked Maya to go to Naivasha with you?” I asked all my friends only one and they all denied it.
I was more confused than ever. My girlfriend was very sure that she was going to Naivasha. She had even started packing her clothes. However, none of my friends were taking her. Was she lying or were they lying?
“Maya is like our sister. Plus, we’d never do that to you.” One of my friends mentioned.
“By the way, why are you not going to Naivasha?”
“You know my financial situation.”
“Don’t worry about that. You can come with us. We’ll cater for everything.”
“I can’t. Maya will never respect me.”
“Cool bro, but if you change your mind, tell us.”
Even though my friends were in the Subaru Boys Club, I knew them too well and trusted them. They would never take my girlfriend anywhere behind my back. However, there was a new guy in our boys’ club who I suspected. He was introduced to us through one of our friends and became part of our group.
About a month ago, he met my girlfriend for the first time and started mentioning a lot about her whenever we met.
“Do you think it’s Jeff?”
“It could be. Don’t worry. If she shows up with him, we’ll take care of it.”
“Thanks, guys.”
I decided to buy Maya her favourite KFC krusher and burger as I headed home to take her mind away from the rally in Naivasha. However, when I got home, the house was empty and her suitcase was gone.
“She was serious about going,” I said to my friend over the phone.
“We’re headed there tomorrow and we’ll keep an eye out for her.”
I couldn’t sleep that night thinking about Maya with another guy in Naivasha. However, I tried to stay optimistic. I kept checking my phone the next day for any updates. My friends weren’t even picking up their phones. After waiting for almost an hour for their call, I decided to go to Naivasha and see for myself.
It wasn’t rational since there were thousands of people there but I wasn’t thinking rationally, I just needed to feel like I was doing something. I headed to the bus stop and took a matatu headed to Naivasha. While I was on my way, my friend finally called back.
“Hey, sorry. I left my phone in the car.” He said.
“It’s okay. Have you seen Maya?”
He was quiet for a while but I could hear him breathing heavily on the other side. I knew that he didn’t have good news for me.
“She’s here.” He finally said.
“Is she with Jeff?”
“She is. They just showed up. Jeff didn’t even tell us that he was coming.”
“It’s fine.”
I didn’t tell him that I was coming just in case he warned Jeff and Maya. Since I already knew where they were staying, I just needed to show up.
We were stuck in traffic for over 6 hours and I got there at almost 11 pm and headed straight to the Airbnb they had rented.
As I approached the house, I could hear loud music and people shouting. It sounded like they were having the time of their life and for a moment I felt bad about interrupting their party. However, I had to confront Maya and Jeff. I walked in and it was like they had seen a ghost.
Suddenly, the whole place went still then Maya started weaving through the crowd trying to hide. I had already seen her so it was pointless. She went to the backside of the house and I followed her.
Jeff tried to stop him but my other friends held him back. I finally caught up with Maya who was already sobbing.
“How could you betray me like this?”
“I kept telling you that I wanted to go to Naivasha.”
“So, you chose to come with one of my friends.”
“Yes. He’s been hitting on me ever since we met and he has more money than you.”
“Fine, if that’s what you want then have fun.”
I thought that I would be hot with anger when I found out the truth but I realized that it wasn’t worth looking like a fool. Maya was an adult and she knew exactly what she was doing. Additionally, if someone I called my girlfriend could do that to me then she wasn’t the one for me.
I stayed at the Airbnb and went back to Nairobi with my friends the following day. When I got to my place, I packed Maya’s things and sent them to her with an Uber. It was difficult letting go of her but I know that it’s for the best.
